The Tyrone junior high football team defeated Bald Eagle Area for their first win of the 2003 season on Thursday evening.
The Little Eagles (1-2-1) have been impressive on offense, but hadn’t been able to convert that into wins, until their 36-8 win at Wingate yesterday.
Tyler Gillman continued an impressive fall with 176 yards on 23 carries. Gillman scored twice from scrimmage on runs of 12 and 23 yards and also was on the end of a 51-yard TD pass from quarterback Donnie Conrad. Gillman also completed two of three passes from his running back position for 34 yards. Both of Gillman’s tosses went to Justin Schopp for gains of 14 and 20 yards.
Conrad, who was two-of-two for 69 yards, also completed an 18-yard completion to Josh Shaffer. Shaffer ran twice for a total of 22 yards.
James Updike chipped in with 76 yards on nine carries and scored the Eagles final two touchdowns on runs of 18 and seven yards.
Bald Eagle Area actually scored first on a three-yard run by Kyle Bowes and two-point conversion by Dewayne Viehdorfer, but the Orange and Black defense took over after that. Following the BEA score, Tyrone allowed just one first down for the remainder of the ballgame.
Josh Shaffer had two solo sacks and shared one with Wade Myers, Myers had one solo and Soloman Beck and Josh Wright each had one sack as the Tyrone defense dominated.
“Early on our defense did bend and give up the score,” said Tyrone coach Dan Plummer, “but after that they came together to hold BEA to one more first down for the rest of the game. This was a better performance by the whole team. Both offense and defense were balanced. We had some outstanding performances by several players instead of just a few. The key to the win in the wind and rain was the play of the offensive and lines. They had good performances both ways.”
Tyrone hosts the Huntingdon junior high next Thursday in a key contest for the Golden Eagles.
