Big Brothers Big Sisters of Blair County has scheduled a dance titled Swing into Summer – Beach Party for Saturday, June 14 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the UVA Club in Altoona.
This is the first year for the dance which is being co-chaired by Big Brothers Big Sisters board members Marsha Ammerman Nee and Paula Binus.
The purpose of the dance is to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters because of the effects of the depressed economy on the program and because of other recent cutbacks from sponsors. For example, United Way alone is facing a $41,000 deficit in the county.
Tickets for the evening are $15 and are still available at the UVA Club, The Belmar Hotel, Thompson’s Pharmacy on Chestnut Avenue and the Big Brothers Big Sisters office.
Tickets will include admission to the dance, food and refreshments. Music is scheduled to be provided by Prime Time.
If individuals or businesses are interested in sponsoring the event, there are three types of sponsorship. A refreshment sponsor is available for $150, which would include two tickets to the event and sponsorship recognition in the program. Entertainment sponsorship is available for $300, which would include four tickets and sponsorship recognition announced at the event and in the program. Beach Party sponsorship is available for $500, which would include six tickets to the event and noted in publicity and evening’s event.
Event sponsors for this year’s event include the UVA Club and Furrer Beverage. Individual sponsors are Bill and Judy Rossman and Greg and Carol Epple.
Prizes and gift baskets will be given away during the course of the evening. Several of the prize sponsors include: Hoss’s, The Altoona Curve, Concept Food Sales, Reliance Bank, Toftrees, Oak Spring Winery, The Capitol Hotel, Hooters and Don Pablos.
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers one-on-one mentoring with children of single-parent families in Blair County. 80 children are matched, and 80 children are on the waiting list. The children range in age from six to 17.
Volunteers are needed and should be at least 18 years old to apply. Husbands and wives can also volunteer together.
