Tyrone Legion scored 20 runs in a win over Corporal Miller just a night before. On Tuesday, with Tyrone Legion playing the second of six games over a period of seven days, the Legionmen were understandably flat following their big offensive output of a night earlier. Barkman Oil scored in every inning but the fourth to pin the first defeat of the year on the Tyrone Legion club 14-6 at Tyrone.
Ten of the 15 runs Barkman scored were unearned.
Tyrone Legion starter Ben Gummo deserved a different fate, going six innings and allowing 11 runs, but just two of them earned. Gummo fanned four and walked two.
Leadoff hitter Johnny Weyandt stroked three hits, including a pair of doubles to lead the offense for Barkman Oil and winning pitcher Curtis Eastep, Josh Lingenfelter, Evan Snowberger and Scott Zimmerman each added two hits in the 12 hit attack.
Down 4-0 after two at bats, Tyrone Legion battled back to make a game of it.
Jason Wilson opened the bottom of the second with a single, moved to second on a base hit by Jeremy Myers and scored on a double by Barry Gummo.
In the third inning, Ben Gummo walked and Andy Garofli provided the highlight of the game for Tyrone fans by drilling the Legion’s first home run of the season over the left field fence for a two-run dinger that sliced the Tyrone Legion deficit to 4-3. Brandon Maceno walked and advanced to second on a balk by the Barkman pitcher, Eastep, but was stranded.
Barry Gummo beat out an infield single in the high grass with one out in the fourth. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Gummo scored when Nick Friling banged a single to right. Friling stole third base as Ben Gummo walked. Garofoli grounded out to second base to drive in Friling, but Gummo was gunned down wandering too far off second base for the final out of the inning.
Barkman Oil kept putting more runs on the board, plating three runs in the third, two each in the fifth and sixth and then for emphasis, tallied three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Brandon Maceno scored the final run of the game for Tyrone Legion in the fifth. Maceno doubled to right to open the frame. Brandon moved over to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Wilson.
Tyrone Legion stranded a total of nine men, including leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, seven of them in scoring position.
Eastep struggled giving up eight hits and walking six hitters in the complete-game win for Barkman, but Tyrone Legion couldn’t seem to come up with the key hit when they needed it.
The top of the Legion batting order produced with centerfielder Barry Gummo and first baseman Nick Friling each getting two hits, but the remainder of the lineup was able to get just four more.
Tyler Weyandt scored three times for Barkman Oil, but was involved in one of the best Tyrone Legion defensive plays of the game. With three runs already scored in Barkman’s seventh inning and the bases loaded and one out, Weyandt lined a pitch that fell into right field near the foul line. It looked as if Tyrone Legion right fielder caught the ball, but the base umpire ruled no catch. Legion right fielder Derrick Soellner fired the ball to cutoff man Matt Germino who wheeled and fired a strike to catcher Andy Garofli who after stepping on home plate to force out Colby Hazanstab, threw to third baseman Nick Cushion who stepped on third forcing out Curtis Eastep. Two force outs were recorded. If you keep score the double play went 9-4-3-5 to end the inning. Weyandt who probably thought he had a base hit since the ball wasn’t caught, ended up getting only a fielder’s choice on the play.
“Ben Gummo pitched a heck of a game out there,” said Tyrone Legion coach John Harlow. “We let him down on defense. I think this was our best hitting game of the season this far, but we couldn’t get the key hit when we needed it. We left too many runners on the bases, especially at third base. We hit well, but couldn’t get the timely hit.
I expected the guys to be flat after last night’s long game, but we need for them to get up for tomorrow’s game. McMullen Furniture is always a tough game for us, no matter what the records are. Our fielding was there the first three games, but tonight it left us. We will need to be sharp, we can’t let this bother us. We have to play tomorrow, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.”
