Tyrone railroad history, Fred Waring, The Gardner Guards, and more of Tyrone’s rich history is spotlighted inside the new Tyrone History Museum in the new train station. I can’t begin to tell you how impressed I am with this new exhibit. Congratulations to the Tyrone Historical Society on the excellent time and dedication it took to put this new positive room together.
Does anyone remember when I praised Mayor Stoner’s new streetscape program? And when I said it would help lead to the filling of store fronts in downtown Tyrone? It’s beginning to happen! Welcome to The Cubby Hole, Rose Garden Gifts, Captain Lou’s Buy Smart and the arrival of a new woman’s clothing store next to the Herald’s offices. There’s only a few empty store fronts left. I know someone is going to say that these aren’t the businesses we need. I don’t agree with that! Antique and gift shops are a very nice niche to have in downtown Tyrone. The Tyrone Merchants Association and these businesses should advertise this new niche both in and out of Tyrone. Inside the holiday season I invite all residents to spend some time in these new stores in pursuit of original and nice Christmas gifts.
So, I do have two major announcements concerning The Daily Herald. We’re moving on UP! After one hundred plus years in the same location, we are moving across the street to plush, new surroundings. The Herald is moving to the old Beneficial offices at 1067 Pennsylvania Avenue, remaining in downtown Tyrone. These new offices serves us better for many reasons, including more work space and a nice lobby area and counter to better serve both our advertisers and subscribers. Be on the look out as you see Herald staffers lugging files, equipment and miscellaneous items across the street. Watch for more details in The Herald of when we have officially made the big move. Other news has our current offices already occupied by an antique furniture dealer. We truly hope this happens adding yet another new business in downtown Tyrone.
The other news is one I talk about with mixed emotions. I will be leaving my post as General Manager of the newspaper at the end of the year. Two years ago my wife and I embarked on a dream of starting a Christian radio station to serve Indiana, PA and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Knowing that this project could take up to five years to happen, we set the project aside and both came to work for this wonderful newspaper company. Well, the FCC approved us to go on air in January of the upcoming year. Christian Hit Radio 103.7 FISH FM will feature mostly music and some sports. We signed a deal to carry Penn State. If you would like to see more about our exciting new project feel free to visit www.fishfm.com on the Internet. I will talk more about my emotions of leaving Tyrone and about the progress of this newspaper in the upcoming weeks.
Thanks to the Tyrone Chamber of Commerce, The Richard Searer Funeral Home and The Bull Pen Restaurant for the great job I hear at the chamber’s annual turkey dinner held last night. I apologize that I couldn’t attend as I had to rush my wife to the hospital on Wednesday evening. She is doing fine after undergoing a day of tests yesterday. Also, thanks to John Harlow and the rest of The Daily Herald staff for attending and assisting with the door prizes and the program at last night’s event.
Next Friday inside The Herald will be our annual Santa’s Gift Guide. This special tab will feature advertising of the area’s fine local businesses, as well as information and recipes to help drive the holiday shopping season. I’ll ask again that you consider shopping locally first and give the businesses of Tyrone and northern Blair County a chance to meet your holiday gift needs. Thanks to all the businesses who took part in this project and to John Harlow and Patty Hyde for their hard work as well.
The Tyrone Times? I learned this week that this community once had two local newspapers. I found this out as Jeff Long’s employees were searching through the walls of the Jones Building looking for a time capsule placed there. If anyone has information or copies of what was called The Times I would love to see it. Feel free to call or stop by The Herald office.
Have a wonderful weekend and a great Thanksgiving holiday with your family. We sure have a lot of work to do with this impending move, the holidays and so much more. Thanks for reading!
