The Tyrone junior high football team hosted Central Mountain on Thursday afternoon.
Leonard Wilson scored four times from scrimmage and caught an 85-yard touchdown pass from Billy Smith to account for all five TDs as the Tyrone junior high Golden Eagles demolished Central Mountain 34-0.
Wilson tallied on a 73-yards run in the first quarter, three- and 48-yards runs in the second stanza, then scored on a pass play from Smith that covered 85 yards. Trey Brockett scored a two-point conversion on a pass from Wilson after Leonard’s first quarter score and Smith booted extra points after both of the Eagles third period TDs.
Dustin Brown added 11 yards on three carries before leaving with an injury, Heath Walk had 20 yards on five carries, Josh Hunter in relief of Brown got 19 yards on four carries and James Updike had seven yards on two carries.
On defense, Matt Lauder, playing in place of an injured Tyler Gillman had an interception and two sacks and Heath Walk, Adam Shaffer and Tyler Updike had one sack each. Robert Emigh had a pair of fumble recoveries.
The Little Eagles finish 7-2 overall, 5-1 in the Big 8 League to claim at least a part of the championship for the second year in a row. Indian Valley knocked off Lewistown yesterday afternoon 19-0 to end the season in a tie with Tyrone. Had Lewistown won, the Panthers would have claimed the title outright, instead they fall into second place.
“The entire team played a great game,” said Tyrone coach Dan Plummer. “It was a good team effort on both sides of the line of scrimmage. There were a lot of great individual efforts. Matt Lauder stepped up on defense and played an outstanding game. Leonard Wilson had another great offensive performance. The offensive line did a great job or we couldn’t have done what we did on offense. T. J. Albright stepped in on kickoff and kick returns and Josh Hunter had a good game at tailback, particularly in the second quarter and late in the game.
I am really proud of these young men. They had to work hard to achieve what they have done. To be able to repeat as Big 8 champs, co-champs, required a lot of hard work and continued effort.”
