Tyrone traveled to Martinsburg for a softball game against the Lady Dragons from Central on Tuesday. The Central girls were only able to manage six hits off Tyrone freshman pitcher Ariane Miller, but took advantage of nine Tyrone errors to win 13-0 in five innings, in a contest played in a stiff wind.
Rachel Smith held the Lady Eagles to just two base runners in the game. Freshman Kassie Gardner got a second-inning pitch from Smith up in the air and was able to reach third base for a triple for the Tyrone girls’ only base hit, and junior Amanda Detwiler walked to become the only other base runner.
“It was tough to try to rebound after our lost to Bellwood (15-13 in eight innings) yesterday,” explained Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “The wind was a factor in the game. Anything hit in the air was an adventure. Kassie Gardner’s triple in the second inning highlighted the game.”
Tyrone (0-4), playing their third game in as many days, after finally playing their twice postponed game with Bellwood-Antis, on Monday, will be on the diamond again today, hosting defending PIAA state champion Philipsburg-Osceola at Hilltop Field at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
