Tyrone tore through the first day of the District 6-AA Wrestling Tournament in fine style, sending four grapplers into this morning\u2019s semifinal round.
\nRonnie Garbinsky (103), A.J. Schopp (112), and Anthony Romano (125) gave the Eagles a super showing in the lightweights, and Shayne Tate (171) showed the faithful that he was back from an injury sustained at the Thomas Tournament by becoming the fourth Orange and Black teammate to secure a berth in the semifinals, which will begin at 12:30 this afternoon.
\nGarbinsky (31-2), the top seed at 103, had little trouble, drawing a bye and then decking both Luke McFarland of Bellwood-Antis, in 1:42 and Evan Link of Penn Cambria in 2:52. Garbinsky, a freshman, will face Forest Hills junior Shane Gallaher (27-4) who is the fourth seed.
\nSchopp (32-3), top seed at 112, also pinned his way into the finals, taking out Penn Cambria\u2019s Kyle Smith in just 0:19, and Bellwood-Antis freshman Dan Noye in 1:42. His semifinal opponent will be No. 4 seed Devin Dorian (20-7), a senior from Westmont-Hilltop.
\nRounding out the third semifinalist in the top four weights, Romano (29-7), a senior No. 2 seed, pinned Adam Leasure of Marion Center, in 3:40 and majored Michael Kline of Central Cambria, 15-4. In the semifinals, he will meet senior Thomas McVicker (26-5) of Forest Hills, the No. 6 seed.
\nAt 171, Tate (21-7). the No. 5 seed, pinned Lee Quist of Cambria heights, in 1:29 and won a tough 3-1 decision over Blairsville\u2019s James Barbonus. In the semis, Shayne will battle undefeated and top seeded Bobby Mort (35-0) of Huntingdon. In the dual meet, Mort triumphed 4-2 over Tate.
\nTyrone also has Chase Weaver (119), Cody Weaver (135), James Weston (140), Jeremy Barlett (145), Dustin Weaver (189), Corey Barnhart (215) and Dalaun Carroll (285) alive in the consolation fourth round, which will kick-off wrestling this morning at 10 a.m.
\nChase Weaver (17-18) will wrestle Ligonier Valley\u2019s Nathan Cahill (16-13), Cody Weaver (19-14) will face Sugar Valley\u2019s Dylan Scott (3-1). Weston will meet Corry McMillan (14-17) of Blairsville. Barnhart (8-18) will wrestle Caleb Stevens of Bellwood-Antis. Carroll (7-15) will face No. 2 seed Brad Michaels (20-6) of West Branch.
\nBellwood-Antis wrestled a pair into the quarterfinals, but has no one left alive in the semifinals. The Blue Devils do still have Dan Noye (112), Shane Noye (130), Caleb Stevens (215) and Cody Smith (285) in the fourth consolation round.
\nDan Noye (8-4) will wrestle sophomore Orry Corman (14-12) of Penns Valley. Shane Noye (11-15) will meet Somerset\u2019s Kyle Pucci (17-8). Stevens (11-14) will tackle Barnhart, who pinned the B-A junior in the dual meet. Smith (15-9) will battle Kevin Stager of Portage. In the dual meet Smith pinned Stager.
\nThe doors will open at 9 a.m. and wrestling will begin with the fourth round consolations at 10 a.m. this morning.
\nThe semifinals will begin at 12:30 p.m., with the consolation semifinals at 3 p.m. Doors will open again at 5 p.m. and Consolation Finals for third fourth and fifth places will start at 6 p.m., with championship finals to follow at 7:15.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
