The Black Knights realized that they had nothing to lose, so giving Tyrone trouble would be a success itself.
Tyrone didn’t expect a close game at all coming into the game, but Mo Valley came out strong and kept things interesting as the score read 22-16 after the first quarter. The Black Knights knocked down three treys to keep Tyrone on their toes, but the first quarter was as close as it would get.
The Eagles came out blazing in the second quarter behind Kyle Updyke, Travis Peterman and Nate Dane. They went on a 12-2 run at 5:17 in the second, giving them a comfortable lead of 34-18. From there it was disaster for Moshannon Valley as the three-headed monster of Dane, Peterman and Updyke combined for 16 of Tyrone’s 25 points in the second.
Adding insult to injury for the Black Knights, Ben Ingle managed to hit a fade-away bank shot from downtown at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 47-22 lead at the break.
The third quarter was outstanding for Tyrone, outputting 16 points to Moshannon Valley’s seven. Tyrone knocked down three treys, two of which came from Steve Catich, who managed to score only eight points on the night, giving him his first game under 10 points this season.
“The four juniors [Dane, Updyke, Peterman and sophomore Ingle] played really well tonight,” head coach George Gripp stated. “This is our future team next year. They all had double-digits, and their work-ethic is paying off for them this season.”
It was 63-29 after three and Tyrone did not stop there as they forced a ‘Mercy Rule’ as they went up 80-40 with 4:00 to go in the game. From there, Tyrone would cruise on to win 82-46 in an easy victory.
With the win, Tyrone improves to 17-3 overall. This is clearly one of the best years in school history. Tyrone had four players in double-figures on the night. Updyke led the way with 19 points, Ingle chipped in 15, Peterman had 14 and Dane cleaned up the mess in the paint with 11 of his own. There was no doubt Tyrone played with more intensity from the second quarter on in the game, getting themselves back on track and ready for Penns Valley on Tuesday.
“Hopefully our hot-shooting carries over for us on Tuesday,” Gripp stated. “We’ll tune up our defense since we have struggled to stop the long range shots the last two games. Penns Valley has a few good players such as Jesse Deluth and a couple of good guards that can do some damage, so our focus will be on shutting down Deluth and the long range shots on Tuesday.”
Tom Rowley led the Black Knights with 13 points and three treys in the loss. He was their gunner, but couldn’t get anything to fall after the first quarter.
Tyrone 82 Moshannon Valley 46
Tyrone – Updyke 8 3-4 19, Ingle 6 1-1 15, Peterman 4 3-4 14, Dane 4 3-4 11, Brooks 4 1-2 9, Catich 3 0-0 8, Franco 2 1-4 5, Brokenshire 0 1-2 1.
