J. Schopp performed like giants at Philipsburg, on Thursday night. Needing two pins in the final two weight classes to get a Tyrone win, first, Garbinsky, in the photo on the left, pinned Luke Wilinson in just 0:49, then Schopp, in the photo on the right, decked Josh Shoemaker in an even shorter 0:38 to give Tyrone a come-from-behind 38-37 triumph over the Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties. (The Daily Herald/Bob Miller)

Talk about a dual worth the price of a ticket! Although the travel up the mountain was iffy, those who braved the weather witnessed one whale of a dual meet at Philipsburg on Thursday in a 38-37 Tyrone triumph.
The match began at 119 and by the time the lineup rolled over from heavy to lightweights, Philipsburg-Osceola had a 37-26 lead with just two weight classes to wrestle.
“Finishing with those two kids at 103 and 112, I don’t think we could have started at a better place that 119,” said Tyrone coach Blair Packer. “We could see how things would develop as we hit the upper weights. We knew Philipsburg was tough at the last three weights, at 189, 215 and heavyweight. We wanted to try and stop then there, but did not get a chance to stop them. We knew we had to pick up some points.”
Picking up points ma y have been a bit of an understatement. The Eagles had no way to win the dual, except if both remaining wrestlers pinned their opponents.
Ronnie Garbinsky and A. J. Schopp may be small in stature, but they were giants on the mat at Philipsburg. First, Garbinsky (15-1) took center stage, grabbing a quick takedown and putting Luke Wilkinson on his back, for the pin in 0:49 to cut the P-O advantage to 37-32.
At that stage of the dual meet, it was nice for the Golden Eagles to have a returning state runner-up in the hole. Schopp (17-1), who led the Tyrone squad in pins last year as a freshman, wrapped up Josh Shoemaker and the dual win just a hair faster than Garbinsky had done moments earlier to record the fall in just 0:38.
With the Eagles recording one point for every second in Schopp’s match, Tyrone improves to 4-3 on the season with their second victory of the week, after humbling backyard rival Bellwood-Antis 48-20 on Tuesday.
Although Mountie 119-pounder Nick Gurol used a big second period to decision Chase Weaver (6-6) 7-2 to begin the dual, Tyrone won the next three weights and got important bonus points in each to jump into a 16-3 lead.
Robbie Sellers (6-8) picked up a forfeit at 125, Anthony Romano (14-5) had five takedowns and two sets of nearfalls in a 16-4 major decision over Todd Ostrosky at 130, and Cody Weaver (10-5) led 7-0 when he decked Jake Hensal in 2:46.
Tyrone moved Jimmy Weston, away from Kurt McCamley (19-4) and Jeremy Barlett each up a weight and gave P-O a forfeit at 140.
Weston (4-10) dropped an 11-1 major decision to Ethan Greenawalt at 145, but Barlett (9-6) won his fifth straight match, by pinning Tim Gray, who would have received a forfeit without the strategy. Barlett led 2-0 after one period, then turned the second period into a takedown and nearfall clinic, notching two takedowns and four sets of nearfalls worth a total of nine points, before working the fall in 4:37 of the third period.
“We had the option of moving a kid up to 145, away from McCamley and it worked,” said Packer. “That was a good sign of a team effort, at 171 for Shayne Tate. If that major would not have been a major, it would have gone to the tiebreaker. It was a real team effort all the way down the line.”
A 15-5 major decision by Shayne Tate at 171, was the only win for the Eagles over the next five weights, but Tyrone needed every point they got from every wrestler they had and gutsy efforts from those who didn’t win, but also didn’t give up more bonus points. Tate (12-4) did his best to deck Chris Minarchick, but came away with four bonus points for a major instead, getting five takedowns, a reversal and three back points.
Mountie 160-pounder Corey Shimmel pinned Cody Smith (1-9) in 0:46 at 160, and super heavyweights Bo Reifer (22-2) pinned Dustin Weaver (0-12) in 2:38 at 189, Dimitri Sidorick (8-3) pinned Corey Barnhart (2-7) in 1:33, at 215 and heavyweight Mike Horton (16-2) pinned Dalaun Carroll (1-6) in 1:13 at 285 to set up the quick ending by Tyrone’s lightweights.
“This was a great, great match for the fans,” explained Packer. “For the coaches, (in these kind of matches), you sweat a lot!”
Junior High
Philipsburg-Osceola won the junior high match 52-36.
Winners for the Tyrone junior high included Kyle Ripka (155), Kirby Lawrence (250), Kaden Hunter (75), David Wunder (85) and Dylan Weston (90), who won by pin, and Tyler Osterhout (105) and Michael Sleeth (110), who won regular decisions.
Tyrone 38 Philipsburg-Osceola 37
119 – Nick Gurin (PO) dec.
