First, Bellwood-Antis wrestled as they seldom have against backyard rival Tyrone from the first bout of the evening at 140, through the 285-pound match. Over the first eight weight classes, B-A, who has never beaten Tyrone on the mat, in 30 tries since 1978, won five and carried a 20-15 lead when the lineup turned over to the lightweights. Once the Eagles got their lightweights into the fray, however, it was all over, with Tyrone sending the Blue Devils home on the short end of a 48-20 score.
Junior Tim Collier opened for Bellwood-Antis with a solid 9-0 major decision over Tyrone sophomore James Weston (4-9) to jump out to a 4-0 team lead. Collier (9-6) recorded a takedown and a pair of back points in the first period, a three-point nearfall in the middle stanza and then a third-period reversal at 140. At 145, Tyrone junior Jeremy Barlett (8-6) used three takedowns a reversal and five back points to double up B-A freshman Travis Taylor (2-7) by a 14-7 count, to get back three of those team points.
Dustin Pruznak (6-9), a Blue Devil senior picked up the only forfeit of the dual meet, at 152.
Moving up to 160, after both Pruznak and Junior Kyle Shawley had weighed in at 152, Shawley (11-9) rode three takedowns and a pair of nearfalls to a 12-3 major decision over Tyrone sophomore Cody Smith (1-8), who was limited to three escapes to build the B-A lead to 14-3.
“We were pretty pleased with all our kids tonight,” explained Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “I think we won our fair share of the matches coming in there at the beginning, and we were in some tight matches that if we just could have swung them around. It would have been a little different result. Bonus points killed us, you can’t give up bonus points if you want to win matches. We will go back to the wrestling room and see if we can improve for Friday night.”
It didn’t take Eagle senior Shayne Tate long to narrow that margin by six. Tate (11-4) took B-A junior Cody Convery (0-3) down three times in the opening minute, added three nearfall points and then wrapped up the fall at the 1:38 mark to slice the lead to 14-9.
Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson inserted Convery at 171, and moved junior Jim Watters moved up to 189, to battle Eagle senior Dustin Weaver. Watters (6-9) made the most of a 13-second time frame to score a 4-0 victory. Watters and Weaver (0-11) were locked in a scoreless tie until with just eight seconds remaining in the first period, Watters picked up a takedown. Then, with just five seconds off the clock in the second period, Watters worked a reversal after choosing the bottom position to begin the middle period.
“I actually didn’t expect Bellwood-Antis to come out like gangbusters in that first handful of matches,” said Tyrone coach Blair Packer. “I was impressed with the way Bellwood wrestled those early matches.”
The match took a new look at 215, where Tyrone senior Corey Barnhart turned the Bellwood-Antis momentum upside down. In perhaps the biggest win of the night for either squad, Barnhart (2-6) put Blue Devil junior Caleb Stevens (8-7) on his back and recorded a fast fall in 1:01 to reduce the Eagles deficit to 17-15. Although, Bellwood-Antis heavyweight Cody Smith decisioned Tyrone senior Dalaun Carroll (1-5), 40 pounds heavier and half a foot taller, 3-0, the handwriting was on the wall for the Blue Devils. Smith (8-5) notched a point for Interlocking, an escape and then another penalty point for two stall warnings, but the rush of the Eagle lightweights would leave the Blue Devils far behind.
“I think when Corey Barnhart came out and pulled off that pin, that kind of broke the momentum of the match,” said Packer. “I think that helped quite a bit on top. Then, of course, our lightweights took over.”
“The number of matches, wrestling time on the mat, makes a difference, in our favor. But, from what I saw out there tonight from Bellwood, Coach Wilson has a nice group of kids-hard workers who didn’t quit. That’s big. When you have a group of kids like that, you have something to work with.”
Tyrone (3-3) used five pins and a regular decision to outscore B-A 33-0 over the second half of the dual to win going away.
Tyrone freshman Ronnie Garbinsky (14-1) had two takedowns and three sets of back points before pinning B-A freshman Luke McFarland (2-13) in 3:46, at 103, Eagle sophomore A. J. Schopp (16-1) pinned B-A frosh Danny Noye (0-1) in his first varsity match, in 1:10, at 112.
Blue Devil senior Donnie Partner (2-6) led Tyrone soph Chase Weaver 4-3 after one period and the match was even 5-5 after two stanzas, but Weaver escaped to begin the final period, took Partner down and showed him the lights in 5:21. At 125, in a battle of two sophomores, Eagle Robbie Sellers led 4-1 and 5-3 after the first two periods before reversing Troy Weyant to his back for the fall in 4:49.
“When we started into the 103-pound class, that’s just a gauntlet to go through with Ronnie and A.J. at 103 and 112. Then Chase Weaver sticks in there with you along with his brother Cody, and will battle with you. They are both tough and strong and do a nice job on the mat. Then you have Sellers who does a nice job and doesn’t quit. You have to go six minutes to beat him, and he will be on you and in your face.”
In the most interesting period of the dual, Tyrone senior Anthony Romano and B-A senior Shane Noye delighted the crowd with a full two minutes of wrestling to begin their war at 130. Romano (13-5) scored first with a takedown, but Noye escaped, took Romano down and turned him to his back for two nearfall points. Romano reversed, and then finally Noye escaped to earn a 6-6 tie after one. Romano controlled the final two periods for a 13-8 victory, however, turning Noye (3-11) for three back points in the second period and exchanging a takedown and reversal for two Noye escapes in the third.
The match ended rather quickly at 135, when Tyrone junior Cody Weaver (9-5) took just 52 seconds to put B-A junior Cody Fink (6-10) on his back for the pin.
“I wasn’t displeased with the effort of anyone tonight, said Wilson. “Our mistakes are the ones we continue to make because of inexperience. We are going to continue to make those until we get kids on the mat for longer periods of time. All we can do is work day-to-day and try to improve.”
Tyrone also won the junior high match 56-33.
Kirby Lawrence (250), Dylan Weston (90), Mark McMonigal (95) and Christian Getz (122) pinned their foes for Tyrone. Kaden Hunter (75), Zach Brown (80) and Tyler Osterhout (105) won by forfeit. Jeremy Miller (138) won by tech fall. Colton Weaver (100), Michael Sleeth (110), Caleb Snyder (130), and Brandon Parks (185) won regular decisions.
Buddy Shaw (145), and Ryan Brown (165) won by fall for Bellwood-Antis. Eric Miller (210), Kyle Fink (85) and Tyler Beech (155) won by forfeit. Jared Woomer won by regular decision.
Tyrone 48 Bellwood-Antis 20
140 – Tim Collier (BA) maj. dec.
