Well, Wednesday night Tyrone showed that there was no threat at all and continued to score at will against a scrappy Central Mountain team.
Tyrone (4-1) came into the game hoping to put up 60 points, but the streaky shooting of Steve Catich, Matt Brooks and Nate Dane allowed the Eagles to completely control the Wildcats in every aspect of the game.
After jumping out 22-10 in the first quarter and 44-17 at the break, Tyrone put it into cruise control and finished off the game with a 78-47 victory over Central Mountain, Wednesday night.
“I scouted those kids [CM],” Tyrone head coach George Gripp stated, “and it seemed at times they had eight guys on the floor the way they flew around on defense. I think our quick start tonight put them on their heels and that’s what we are striving to do every game this year.”
Tyrone jumped out to a 27-10 first quarter lead Monday night against Juniata Valley, and looked as though they were playing the exact same team on Wednesday.
After a one-sided first half, Central Mountain managed to earn some respect by keeping things even in the second half. The teams tied 14-14 in the third and Tyrone out-scored them 20-16 in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats showed they were able to score in bunches late in the second half.
It was Brooks, Dane and Catich scoring the points for Tyrone in the victory. Brooks carried over his offense from Monday night, scoring 16 points on eight shots against the Wildcats. Dane chipped in 15 points, and recorded yet another double-double, and Catich cleaned up as usual, scoring 22 points for the Eagles in the win.
“We know that there is more to this team than just Steve [Catich]. He is the main man behind the offense, but we all know that we have more than just one scorer this season. If we get two or three guys in double-digits each night, that will make us even harder to beat.”
The Eagles improve to 5-1, including five straight wins since the season opener against Huntingdon. Tyrone will travel to Penns Valley Friday night, trying to extend the win streak.
“Penns Valley is similar to Central Mountain. They run full-court man-to-man defense the entire game, so we have to be prepared for that. They are very aggressive and play in your face defense with no breaks. We need to overcome their pesky defense and make good decisions with the basketball. I hope to score 60 or 70 points down there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the game ends up in the 40s.”
Central Mountain came in with a 2-4 record and fell to 2-5 after Wednesday night.
