What a way to kick off the holiday season.
If the degree of difficulty wasn’t high enough, it got even tougher last weekend without one team being added to the schedule when Tyrone sophomore point guard Rachel Emigh sustained a sprained ankle in a shoot around and got the worst prognosis imaginable – three weeks on the shelf.
Her absence was felt immediately against the Lady Wildcats as Tyrone crumbled under Central Mountain’s full-court pressure in a 68-31 loss. In one game, the Lady Eagles went from being a team no one could press in three games to a team that surrendered 23 points in the first quarter alone against the ‘Cats’ 1-2-1-1 scheme, thanks to its inability to bring the ball up court against pressure.
By the two-minute mark of the first quarter, Rhoades had already used two time-outs to try to set his press-break and demand execution.
“We didn’t attack it the way we practiced,” said Rhoades. “We don’t really have another true point guard, and it doesn’t get any easier. In the half-court, Brook (Garbinsky) ran the point and did a pretty good job, but we didn’t have anyone to drive, penetrate, draw defenders and kick.”
And that was the Lady Eagles’ other cause of woe. Even when they were able to set up their offense, there was no one to jumpstart it as Emigh had done over the first two weeks of the season. In three games, Emigh (14 points per game) had scored double figures every game, and Tyrone had a least two double figure scorers three times.
Last night, Kayla Corle topped Tyrone’s scoring chart with nine points.
“We couldn’t score,” said Rhoades. “(Emigh’s absence) was a huge factor.”
Central Mountain carried the first frame 23-6 and led 40-16 at halftime. Mandy Moore did most of the damage for the Lady Wildcats, topping all scorers with 20 points.
The Lady Eagles fell to 2-2 on the season, and now face the challenge of rebuilding a team that planned on contending for the Mountain League championship entering the season.
Garbinsky, who started at point for some of last season, gives the Lady Eagles the luxury of a back-up point guards with varsity experience, but it doesn’t solve their problems with pressure or their need for a penetrator to create shots for teammates.
“How we responded tonight could be the biggest thing,” said Rhoades. “We didn’t play aggressive or get any pressure on the ball.
