The Eagles 3-1, coming off three straight wins as they faced the Hornets, who presented a 4-2 record coming into the game.
Tyrone set aside the records and completely shut down Juniata Valley in the first quarter, reeling off a 7-0 run within the first minute of the game. A full court press was also in effect for Tyrone, forcing seven first quarter turnovers. Drew Peterson stopped the short run, only to see Tyrone explode with a 16-2 run with 4:09 to go in the first quarter.
Steve Catich unleashed 13 of his game and season high 38 points, as Tyrone took a walloping 27-10 first quarter lead.
“I told the guys that I didn’t want to have a let down this game,” Tyrone head coach George Gripp said. “This was one of those in between games that teams usually overlook and struggle in. I made sure we got out to a big enough lead so that this wouldn’t happen. We have a big game on Wednesday, and Juniata Valley was all we were focused on coming into the game.”
After a stellar first quarter, the Hornets began to show off their long range shots, converting three straight treys, sparking a 9-4 run and cut the lead to 31-19 with a little over 5:00 to go.
The Eagles quickly got back on track, however, as they answered back with an 11-4 run to end the first half. Tyrone was up big at half, 42-23, clearly their best half this season.
The Hornets just could not stop Catich, or Tyrone for that matter, as the Eagles put on a spectacular third quarter performance. The Eagles jumped out with an 11-2 run, and then added an 18-3 run to end the third. Catich managed to score 19 points in the third quarter alone, as he was unstoppable.
“Steve’s [Catich] been bringing his game every night, and he is primarily tough to guard when you go into a man-to-man set. It seems as though he scores at will in some points of the game. He is definitely playing really well right now,” Gripp stated.
With a 71-30 lead after three-quarters of play, Tyrone put the icing on the cake, winning big, 84-39. The past two games Tyrone has given up 40 and 39 points, improving their defense each night.
Tyrone spread the offense against the Hornets as Matt Brooks, Nate Dane and Catich combined for 66 of the Eagles’ 84 points. It was a sight to see as Catich tallied 38 points, improving his high-flying season total to 128 points and 25.6 ppg. Brooks added 14 and Dane chipped in 12 as Tyrone won their fourth straight game.
It was Juniata Valley third loss on the season as Ethan DeVore led the way in the losing effort with 11 points. The Hornets continued their trend, hitting five trey’s, but we all know that statistic is sub-par for Juniata Valley.
Tyrone continues Wednesday night at home against a scrappy Central Mountain squad.
“We know that Central Mountain is going to look from the outside in,” Gripp said. “They have some really good shooters, and in the second quarter tonight I was a little upset that we didn’t get out and defend the three a little better. There are a couple of snipers on that team that can hit from anywhere, so defending the long shot Wednesday will be a victory in its own.”
Tyrone 84 Juniata Valley 39
Juniata Valley – DeVore 5 0-0 11, Peterson 3 0-2 7, Kennedy 3 0-0 7, Boyd 1 0-0 3, Carper 2 0-0 5, Espy 3 0-1 6.
