Through three quarters, they had made just 15 of 49 shots and turned the ball over 21 times. Leading 48-35 heading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles had little reason to think the fourth quarter would be much different.
It was different, but even then it wasn’t so much BEA’s offense as Tyrone’s difficulty doing the little things that put games away. The Lady Eagles won 63-60, despite turning the ball over nine times in the fourth quarter and making just 4 of 13 foul shots with under four minutes to play.
“It’s the kind of win that builds character,” said Tyrone coach Luke Rhoades, whose team improved to 2-0 overall and in the Mountain League. “It’s nice to win, but the fact is, we had to fight through and overcome a lot of adversity. We wanted to be 2-0 at the end of the first week, as we are.”
The adversity Rhoades referred to centered on his team’s wide-eyed look against BEA’s fourth quarter press due to personnel match ups he was forced to use as early as the first quarter. Starters Lindsey Christine, Rachel Emigh and Kayla Corle all had three fouls in the first half, necessitating a major shift in Rhoades’ substitution pattern. By the final minute of play, Corle and Emigh both had fouled out.
After Corle went to the bench with 46 seconds left and Tyrone leading 59-56, Emigh made 2 of 4 foul shots within a 10 second span to make it 62-56 with 32 seconds to play, seemingly putting the game out of reach. But Margaret Rougeux’s three pointer with 23.7 on the clock pulled BEA within three and extended the game.
Emigh missed a pair of foul shots on Tyrone’s next possession, and Bald Eagle pulled within a single basket with a foul shot after Emigh fouled out. But with the game on the line, BEA’s 5-foot-11 post Danielle Reese – who led all scorers with 20 points – missed a jump shot from just outside the lane, and Kassie Faretta pulled down the board to seal the game.
“We played hard like we did in our first game, but again we got in early foul trouble,” said Rhoades. “In the first half, our bench did an excellent job picking up the scoring and maintaining our lead.”
Tyrone built a big first half lead on the scoring of Emigh, Corle and sophomore Mara Hawes, who led the Lady Eagles with 16 points, 10 of which came in the first half. It was 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and 33-16 by halftime, and Tyrone was hitting 50 percent of its shots from the floor, a marked improvement from the 33 percent output two nights earlier in Huntingdon.
But Emigh picked up her third foul 37 seconds into the third quarter, and Christine picked up hers two minutes later. Emigh, especially, was missed when BEA extended its pressure full-court. With her out, Tyrone turned the ball over 12 times in the third quarter, as Bald Eagle began cutting into a 19-point lead.
BEA started the fourth on a 6-2 run, and kept chipping away as the Lady Eagles struggled from the line. Emigh found herself there most often, and she managed to make just 3-for-10 down the stretch and 7-of-17 for the game.
Still, Emigh finished with 15 points in her second double-figure game of the season. Faretta scored 10, including a pair of lay ups on second-half fast breaks to snap BEA’s pressure.
Rhoades credited senior point guard Brook Garbinsky with helping to alleviate some of the pressure felt by Bald Eagle’s pressure, and Hawes for picking up the scoring load.
“Everyone played hard, and everyone had to contribute something,” said Rhoades.
Tyrone’s Jayvees lost 54-36, despite eight points from Brook Romano.
VARSITY
TYRONE 63 BALD EAGLE AREA 60
TYRONE – Christine 3 0-0 6; Corle 4 0-1 9; Faretta 4 1-2 10; Garbinsky 1 1-2 4; Emigh 7 7-17 15; Harden 0 0-0 0; Hawes 7 2-2 16; Zimmerman 1 0-0 3; Ray 0 0-0 0.
