No, it wasn’t a match that was decided by the last weight class, and it wasn’t a meet where the Eagles had to fight off a determined come-back effort, or stage a string of wins to come from behind themselves. Instead. It was a match that the Tyrone grapplers knew they had won before the first weight class was announced. Tyrone received four forfeit wins to begin the match and knew they would get another along the way. Only eight matches were actually wrestled on the mat in the Golden Eagles’ 57-24 triumph.
The trick was to maintain intensity in a match that everybody on the mat and in the stands already knew had been decided.
In that light, Tyrone coach Blair Packer was pleased with the results.
“We challenged the kids to see where they are, and I believe we are where we need to be right now,” said Packer. “Overall, I was pleased with their efforts. It was nice for newcomers Rob Sellers and James Weston to get their first varsity wins in the opening match of the season.”
After Ronnie Garbinsky (103), A. J. Schopp (112), Donnie Hunter (119) and Chase Weaver (125) all picked up their forfeit wins, Rob Sellers got things started on the mat for Tyrone at 130. Sellers trailed 4-2 after the first period, but escaped for the only point of the second stanza to close to 4-3, then pinned Ridge Miller from the top in 4:46, after Miller chose the down position to begin the final period.
At 135, Anthony Romano opened his fourth season on the mats by hammering Miles Longenecker for a fall in 1:55. Romano notched a pair of takedowns and a three-point nearfall prior to the fall.
After Cody Weaver had his hand raised for a forfeit win at 140, James Weston and Sam Berkheimer were engaged in a tight practically non-scoring contest at 145. Weston scored a second-period takedown when Berkheimer took neutral to begin the period for the only scoring of the first four minutes. In the third period, Weston took top and never let up until he worked the pin in 4:32
Leading 48-0, with the match long since in the Eagles’ pocket, Tyrone forfeited to Kody Miller at 152 to give Central their first points.
At 160, Jeremy Barlett and the Dragons’ Cameron Price were involved in probably the most interesting match of the short evening. Barlett led 2-0 after one period, and emerged with a 6-2 advantage followed a wild middle stanza with the two wrestlers rolling each other around for reversals, with Barlett opening up his lead a bit with two reversals to his foe’s one. Barlett then added to his lead with another takedown before surrendering an escape for the 8-3 decision in the only weight class to go the full six minutes.
Shayne Tate racked up three takedowns and a nearfall before decking Jason Prokop in 1:11 at 189, the Eagles last win of the evening.
Cody Smith was pinned by Central’s Matthew Laughlin at 171, Dustin Weaver was pinned by Billy Myers at 215 and Wayne Dembitsky was decked by Jeremy Rhodes at 285.
The Tyrone junior high blitzed through Spring Cove 56-21 to win their opening dual meet.
Caleb Snyder (138), Derek Dasher (145), Michael Sleeth (105) and Nick Romano (110) picked up forfeits for the Little Eagles. Brandon Parks (165), David Wunder (90), Mark McMonagle (95), and Tyler Osterhout (100) won by fall. Jeremy Miller (155) and Andrew Warrender (115) picked up major decisions.
Tyrone 57 Central 24
103 – Ronnie Garbinsky (T) won by forfeit
112 – A. J.
