{"id":2485,"date":"2007-11-28T11:10:19","date_gmt":"2007-11-28T15:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/v3\/?p=2485"},"modified":"2008-09-02T11:10:51","modified_gmt":"2008-09-02T15:10:51","slug":"area-children-invited-to-participate-in-poster-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/?p=2485","title":{"rendered":"Area children invited to participate in poster contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The American Red Cross is inviting area children to participate in its 2007-08 poster contest to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and to recognize outstanding student efforts.<br \/>\nThe contest is being organized by the Cultural Diversity Committee of the 100-county American Red Cross Blood Services, Greater Alleghenies Region.<br \/>\nThe contest is open to all children enrolled in fourth, fifth and sixth grades this year.<br \/>\n\u201cPrevent, Prepare, Respond: How does the Red Cross help?\u201d is this year\u2019s theme and participants are encouraged to visit the national American Red Cross website at www.redcross.org for ideas on how to represent this theme.<br \/>\nParticipation is not without its perks as prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, as well as for honorable mention. Entrants will also receive a Red Cross recognition item.<br \/>\nA $200 U.S. Savings Bond will be awarded to the first place winner; a $100 U.S. Savings Bond to the second place finisher and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond for third place.<br \/>\nThe contest rules state participants may draw a poster using pens, pencils, crayons, paint or magic markers. Computer-generated entries will not be accepted. Entries should be between 11 by 14 inches and 12 by 16 inches in size.<br \/>\nOrganizers ask that the child\u2019s name, grade, teacher, school, address and phone number is placed on the back of the entry.<br \/>\nSubmit posters to American Red Cross Blood Services, Attn: Linda Myers, 250 Jari Drive, Johnstown, Pa. 15904 by December 21.<br \/>\nWinning entries are chosen when the region\u2019s employees vote for their favorite poster using tickets purchased from the Diversity Committee.<br \/>\nFunds from the tickets sales is then donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.<br \/>\nIn a recent press release, public relations manager and chair of the cultural diversity committee, Marianne Spampinato, said, \u201cThe world can be a scary place when kids hear about floods, fires and other disasters.<br \/>\n\u201cWe believe this theme will help students and their families to be prepared, plus their participation can support the Red Cross in assisting victims of disasters.\u201d<br \/>\nAlso, the Southern Alleghenies chapter of the American Red Cross, serving this area, is continuing the sale of Punxatawney Phil Ty Beanie Babies. Interested individuals are invited to stop by, call, or e-mail to purchase a Beanie Baby. Each Phil purchased benefits the Southern Alleghenies American Red Cross.
