Kids start practicing, because registration has begun for the eighth annual General Mills and Weis local Giggle-Off contest scheduled for Saturday, June 16 at the Altoona Curve game at the Blair County Ball Park.
\nThose who may qualify for the contest are kids three to 13 years of age. Registration forms are available at Weis 40 and 64 in Altoona, Weis 140 in Everett, Weis 48 in Mount Union, Weis 35 in Huntingdon and also at The Daily Herald office in Tyrone.
\nFive contestants will be randomly chosen through a drawing. Those chosen will have a week to practice for the contest.
\nInterested individuals can enter at the Herald or the other stores until Monday, June 4. Winners are scheduled to be drawn by June 6, and the chosen contestants will be notified by telephone.
\nCourtesy of General Mills, each chosen contestant and their family will receive tickets to the Curve game scheduled for June 16 at the Blair County Ball Park, which is also the day of the Giggle-Off contest.
\n\u201cBasically, we do this at the Altoona Curve game to give it a family atmosphere,\u201d said General Mills sales representative and organizer of the Giggle-Off contest, Mike Blaska.
\nDuring the contest, the contestants actually go onto the field. They giggle into a microphone for the crowd to hear. The contestants are then judged based on their giggles. The crowd has the honor of picking the winner by applause.
\nCash prizes will be awarded to the contestants, including: first prize, $50; second, $40; third, $30; fourth, $20 and fifth, $10.
\nBlaska said the event has grown tremendously over the years. Last year, there were around 900 entries from kids all around the area, and the winner of the contest was Josh Welteroth.
\n\u201cIt was a perfect fit for Weis and General Mills to team up together for this kid\u2019s project,\u201d added Blaska. \u201cIt\u2019s something the kids always enjoy. It\u2019s a real family night out because the parents get to be there in the stands too.\u201d
\nBlaska added, \u201cIt\u2019s a thrill for the kids to go down on the field and meet some of the players, and you have to give credit to the kids for giggling on cue.\u201d
\nGeneral Mills and Weis are also giving away 2,000 logo baseballs to the first 2,000 people of any age the night of the game.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
