That game, originally scheduled for April 12, featured a season high for Tyrone in hits and runs scored. One big inning was the difference for the Lady ‘Cats.
On Tuesday, at Huntingdon in the return match, Tyrone not only was competitive, they returned the favor, using three fifth-inning scores to fashion a 5-3 win.
After the Lady Eagles opened the game with a tally in the first inning, Huntingdon came right back in the bottom of the first to take the lead, but a critical double play allowed the Tyrone girls to escape without further damage.
“The bottom of the first inning was critical,” explained Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “The double play with the out at home was huge. Huntingdon had four hits in the first inning and only two runs to show for it.”
Katie Young and Katie Keating started the game for Huntingdon with base hits and Brittany McNeal hit a double to score Young. With Keating on third and McNeal on second, Heather Malick hit a ground ball to Megan Turiano at shortstop. Megan threw to Lindsay Christine at first for the out and Christine alertly threw home to get Keating trying to score from third. Brittany McNeal scored on Ashley Kifer’s hit to make the score 2-1 Huntingdon, and Kylie Everhart flew out to Ashley Pennabaker to end the inning.
Kifer (three RBI) and McNeal (two RBI) combined to drive in five runs in the first meeting between these two schools.
With the score 2-2 going into the Tyrone fifth Ashley Pennabaker, Kim Cherry and Megan Turiano hit back-to-back-to back doubles. Pennabaker scored on Cherry’s double, Kim scored on Turiano’s double and Megan then scored on a single by Casie Glashauser.
With Tyrone leading 5-2, Huntingdon scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning, and loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs but Kylie Everhart flew out to Brooke Garbinsky to end the game.
“We played well today and made some key defensive plays and had some timely hitting,” said Loncher.
The Tyrone girls (2-14) will celebrate Senior Day against Bald Eagle Area, at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex on Thursday.
