This Lenten season, St. Matthew\u2019s Religious Education\/CCD students were encouraged to participate in the Good Samaritan Project.
\nTo date, St. Matthew\u2019s Good Samaritan Committee has helped two refugee families establish new lives in America, and assisted some individuals who lost their homes due to Hurricane Katrina. This group is now assisting a family who lives in a small village in Guatemala. The proceeds of this student Lenten project will benefit the Senora Ramona Soto family in Guatemala.
\nSenora Ramona Soto is 78 and is caring for her grandchildren: Cristofer (4-years-old), Annike (7-years-old), Dany (10-years-old) and Mirliss (15-years-old). Each student was asked to bring in an item for an Easter Basket. The students were to earn the cost of an item, between $2 to $5 an item, by helping out with family chores, assisting other family members, and\/or neighbors. With this action, the students learned how they can actively participate at their young age and help those less fortunate.
\nEach grade was assigned a theme for their grade\u2019s basket. The response of the students was overwhelming! These young students, grades K \u2013 11, earned enough to purchase items that filled 15 large baskets. Tickets for the baskets are being sold after the masses on March 17-18, 24-25, March 31 and April 1. The winning tickets will be drawn following the April 1 mass at 10:30 a.m., and the recipients will be contacted before Easter.
