The Bearcats extended their season record to 12-3 with a 47-22 triumph over the Golden Eagles, who fall to 5-7.
With the match beginning at 189, Jason Kylor (24-1) and Tyrone senior Donnie Conrad wrestled through the first period with no score. Conrad (13-7), who had won seven of his previous eight matches, chose the bottom position to start the second period and Kylor hooked up a cradle for the fall midway through the period, in 3:03. At 215, Jason Everhart (1-0) made his varsity debut by pinned Eagle sophomore Dustin Weaver (1-12) in the nearly identical time of 3:08. Everhart grabbed a 2-0 lead after one period and added a nearfall in the second prior to the fall. Completing the early Huntingdon run, heavyweight Ryan Everhart (22-2) took Tyrone senior Brandon Oswalt (0-3) down and wrapped up the quick fall in 0:27 to give the ‘Cats an 18-0 advantage after the first three weights.
Reliable super frosh A. J. Schopp got Tyrone on the scoreboard when the lineup turned over at 103 by dominating Jesse Runk (18-7) 11-1. Schopp (22-1) opened slowly, leading just 2-1 after one period, but picked up the momentum with an escape, takedown and back points in the middle period, then added another takedown and a pair of penalty points for stalling with Runk just trying to avoid getting pinned.
Nathan Mykut (13-9) picked up a forfeit for Huntingdon at 112, and Addison Yingling (15-10) decked Tyler Poorman (5-13) in 2:58, while leading 7-1, at 119.
At 125, the Eagles started a string of their own that would take the 30-4 deficit and slice it to 33-22, as close as they would manage to get.
T. J. Albright (17-5) won for the 10th straight outing by taking Landon Yingling (17-7) down early and recording the fall in 1:28.
Pete Mykut pushed (17-6) the Huntingdon lead to 33-10 by scoring all the points in a 3-0 win at 130, over Anthony Romano (6-9). After a scoreless opening stanza, Mykut turned Romano for two back points in the second period and escaped in the third for the shutout win.
At 135, Tyrone sophomore Cody Weaver (7-7) erased a 1-0 deficit to Jake Meyers (3-5) into a 5-1 win with a reversal and three-point nearfall in the final two minutes of the match. J. P. VanAllman kept the surge going for the Eagles at 140. After giving up the first takedown, VanAllman (8-9) used a reversal and three back points in the first period for a 5-2 lead, then rolled Adam Fye (5-15) for a second-period nearfall and added the pin in 2:30.
Finally, at 145, Eagle sophomore Jeremy Barlett pulled off a shocker by edging Kyle Thompson (13-10) 5-4. Barlett (3-15) led 3-0 after a second-period escape and takedown, then traded two escapes to two takedowns for Thompson to squeeze out the one-point victory. The final escape came with just nine seconds remaining in a match that seemed headed for overtime.
“That was one of the key matches for us,” said Tyrone coach Blair Packer. “Both guys were tired and Jeremy still had enough to get out with nine seconds left. Another key was Cody Weaver. Cody wrestled a tough match to beat a good kid, he just refused to quit.”
Huntingdon had their big guns ready to finish off the match however to stop any Tyrone attempt at a comeback. With the final three wrestlers sporting a combined 60-4 record, the Bearcats won all three weight classes to post the win.
Undefeated Eli Norvell (19-0), a 2006 Delaware state champion who transferred to Huntingdon this year, decisioned Jake Smerekar 6-1 after turning Smerekar (13-7) twice for two-point nearfalls in the second period. Vance Meyers (23-0) two takedowns, a reversal and three sets of nearfalls to tech fall Shayne Tate (12-10) 15-0, at 160. Bobby Mort (21-4) had the only points of the match on a first-period takedown, when he pinned Justin Schopp (14-8) in 2:27 at 171, to close out the dual.
“Overall, I was pleased. The entire team effort was an improvement,” said Packer. “Wrestling against a star-packed lineup like Huntingdon, who should be one of the top teams in the upcoming District Team Duals, shows us where we are and how far we have to go.”
Tyrone wrestles another tough triple-A school on Thursday, traveling to Hollidaysburg to wrestle the Golden Tigers.
Huntingdon 47 Tyrone 22
189 – Jason Kylor (H) pinned Donnie Conrad 3:03
215 – Jason Everhart (H) pinned Dustin Weaver 3:08
285 – Ryan Everhart (H) pinned Brandon Oswalt 0:27
103 – A.
