The Tyrone ninth grade boys basketball team defeated Roosevelt 48-37, on Thursday at Roosevelt.
\nTyrone used a stifling full court man to man pressure to jump out to a 9-4 lead after one quarter. The press continued to give up easy baskets for the Little Eagles but a late surge by Roosevelt brought the halftime score to 20-15.
\nTyrone went on a 8-4 run to start the second half, but again Roosevelt came storming back to close the lead to just two points, when Shane Walker left a 40 footer go at the buzzer which put Tyrone up by five after three quarters.
\n\u201cThat shot by Shane was a huge emotional lift for us……nothin but net!\u201d said Tyrone Coach Pat Campbell. \u201cThey were back in the game, and we were not taking care of the basketball\\’\u201d
\nIn the fourth quarter, Tyrone continued to employ their tough man to man press and it seemed to wear Roosevelt down resulting in some easy lay-ups.
\n\u201cWhen our man press is working, it can really change the game. Tonight I think that the easy baskets that we got from it were the difference,\u201d said Campbell. \u201cThe kids were ready to play tonight, and when they are, we can be tough to beat.\u201d
\nTyrone used a balanced scoring attack with eight players making the boxscore lead by Shane Walker with a pair of 3\\”s and three 2-point buckets for a game high 12 points, followed by Dillion McKeehan nine points. Jordan Taylor added eight, and Andy Brokenshire scored six points.
\nThe win brings Tyrone\u2019s season record to 9-4.
\nToday, Tyrone will take on Penns Valley which won the earlier meeting by a 31-28 score.
\nThe Roosevelt eighth graders handed Tyrone a 33-23 loss.
\nTyrone jumped out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, but went cold in the second quarter being outscored 11-3 and then finished with only six points in the second half to Roosevelt\u2019s 15 second-half points, to absorb the loss which dropped the Eagle eighth graders\u2019 record to 10-4.
