Although the referee had to go all the way down the list of criteria to letter “F”, most first points scored, the Blue Devils pulled out the victory. On Thursday night at Bellwood, against Everett, the two teams were again tied 36-36. This time, however, you didn’t have to go nearly as far down the list. Everett won the match 37-36, on criteria B- most wins 7-6, with no match at 103.
Bellwood-Antis began the dual with a barrage, getting three straight falls to open an 18-0 advantage early.
Once-beaten senior Rickey Shawley (18-1) jumped out to a big lead over Garrett O’Rourke at 145, to begin the dual, before recording his 10th pin of the year in 2:48. Shawley opened the scoring with a takedown and then added two nearfalls, another takedown and three more back points for a 12-1 lead after one period. O’Rourke took the bottom position to begin the second period and was almost out for an escape, when Shawley picked him up and dumped him on his back for the quick fall.
At 152, Ronnie Wilson (9-6) wasted no time in taking Dylan Bowman down and getting the pin in 0:20.
Completing the pin parade at 160, Garett Wyland (5-110) and Josh Wilt rolled each other around for most of the first two periods, with Wyland holding onto a 7-5 lead, with a three-point nearfall to begin the second stanza the big difference. Wyland reversed Wilt to his back first for two points and then for the fall in 5:48.
Everett’s 171-pounder Lance Clark and Troy Byers (2-14) started their match off much the same way as the weight class in front of them. Clark began with two takedowns and a nearfall, and Byers had a reversal and two back points to trail just 6-5. Clark hit a reversal and put Byers on his back for three nearfall points at the end of the period however, to jump into an 11-5 advantage. Clark added a reversal and two back points for all the scoring in the middle period, then built 15-5 lead into a technical fall at the buzzer with two more takedowns and a nearfall.
At 189, Jimmy Watters (7-10) picked up a forfeit to increase the Blue Devils team lead to 24-5.
The teams traded pins at the next two weights, with Emmanual Wright pinned B-A sophomore Caleb Stevens (3-10) in 3:05 at 215, and then Cody Smith (2-1) taking just 0:32 to deck Josh Millin at heavyweight.
Everett won five of the final six weight classes to get the tie and ultimately the team win.
Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson chose to pass up a forfeit win at 103, and move freshman Troy Weyant up to 112 to wrestle Collin Troxell. Troxell grabbed a takedown and Weyant escaped in the first period. Weyant (11-8) escaped at the start of the second period to tie the match 2-2, but Troxell took Weyant down and pinned him at the 2:45 mark.
At 119, B-A junior Donnie Partner (3-12) and Everett’s Kevin Claybcomb were scoreless after the first two periods and the first minute of the third. Claycomb scored an escape and then a takedown and two back points in the final minute to defeat Partner 5-0 to edge the Warriors to within 10 points of the Blue Devils 30-20.
Shane Noye registered the final points of the evening for Bellwood-Antis by pinning Levi Smeltzer. Noye trailed 2-0 and was being controlled by Smeltzer, when suddenly, Noye (6-9) reversed and pinned the Warrior 125-pounder in 1:48 to stretch the B-A lead to 36-20.
It was all Everett after that. First Timmy Collier ( 3-11) scored the first points at 130, on a takedown for Bellwood-Antis, but Mike Feathers reversed Collier to his back for the fall in 1:11. Then, Brian Faust led Cody Fink (5-12)8-1 and pinned the B-A sophomore in 1:26 to draw Everett to 36-32 in the team score. Finally at 140, Levi Miller majored Dustin Pruznak 15-2 to even the team score 36-36. Pruznak (3-7) scored a third-period nearfall, but Miller had a takedown, reversal and four sets of nearfall points.
Bellwood-Antis (2-5) will travel to Penns Valley on Saturday, Jan. 20, to make up a dual that was rescheduled at the beginning of the season when the Blue Devils were still playing in the PIAA football playoffs.
