In a contest marred by a combined 26 for 115 shooting and 42 turnovers, it was a spurt by Tyrone during the last three minutes of the third quarter that was the difference.
More precisely, the difference was the hot hand of Lady Eagle guard Kassie Faretta. The 5-foot-7 junior scored 14 of her team-high 15 points in the third quarter to lift Tyrone to a 35-23 lead, breaking open what had been a one-point game at halftime. The Lady Devils would never again come within fewer than seven as Tyrone snapped a two-game losing streak.
Tyrone improved to 6-12, while B-A dipped to 5-11.
“Faretta hit some big shots coming out in the third quarter,” said B-A coach Ali Stodart. “She came out looking to shoot and was confident with her shot, and we just didn’t do a good job of denying her the ball.”
The Lady Eagles led 26-21 midway through the third when Faretta took a steal at mid-court a raced for a lay up that made it 28-21. It was a sequence that ignited Faretta, who went on to make three of her next four three-point attempts to lift her team to a 12-point lead.
“Kassie is a player who was coming off the bench at the beginning of the season, and she’s played herself into a starting role because she’s worked hard at practice, and more importantly, she’s listened to everything the coaches have said and tried to get better,” said Tyrone coach Luke Rhoades.
B-A cut into the lead twice in the fourth quarter, pulling within 35-27 on a basket by Brittany Webb at the 6:00 mark, and 41-34 two-and-a-half minutes later when Liz Erickson banked one in from the key.
But when Faretta cooled off, her teammates picked up the slack. Tyrone made four of its seven field goal attempts in the fourth quarter, including a lay in off a back-door cut by Kayla Corle after the Lady Devils had climbed within seven.
“We really didn’t come out prepared to play the way you have to play to beat a team that plays as hard as Bellwood” said Rhoades, whose team trailed by five at the end of the first quarter. “We weren’t focused, and what we have to realize is that teams that compete for District championships play hard every night.”
Tyrone turned the ball over six times and shot just 2-for-17 in the first quarter when B-A, behind nine points from Erickson, took a 12-7 lead.
It wasn’t much better for the Lady Eagles in the second quarter, when they made just 1 of 18 field goal attempts, but Tyrone took an 18-17 lead at halftime after making 9 of 11 foul shots.
At the same time, the Lady Eagles were able to slow Erickson, who finished with a game-high 18, when they switched freshman Paris Harden to the 5-foot-10 sophomore after Liz Tepsic was sidelined with foul trouble. B-A shot just 2-of-16 in the second and finished the game 14-for-58.
“We need to get better taking care of the ball and knowing the difference between a good shot and a not-so-good shot,” said Stodart. “Sometimes we’re not sure and that comes back to youth a little bit, but we’re making progress since the beginning of the year.”
Brooke Garbinsky added nine points for Tyrone, while Tepsic finished with seven.
JUNIOR VARSITY
B-A won the junior varsity game 30-18 behind a game-high 15 points from Lauren Lender. Carly Ray led the Lady Eagles with eight.
B-A held Tyrone scoreless in the first quarter and led 19-5 at halftime.
VARSITY
TYRONE – Emigh 0 4-4 4; Faretta 5 1-3 15; Corle 2 1-2 5; Turiano 2 2-2 7; Tepsic 2 3-7 7; Garbinsky 1 7-9 9; Waite 0 0-0 0; Harden 0 0-0 0. 12 18-27 47.
BELLWOOD-ANTIS – Webb 1 0-0 2; Lombardo 1 0-0 2; Lechner 2 0-0 6; Hunter 4 0-2 8; Erickson 6 6-12 18; Lender 0 0-0 0; Ingram 0 0-0 0; Hippo 0 0-0 0; er.
