In the return contest, at Bellwood on Monday evening, the B-A girls made sure there would be no repeat.
Bellwood-Antis outscored the Lady Trojans 31-16 in the second half for a very satisfying 62-45 victory.
“We definitely turned up the defense in the second half,” explained Bellwood-Antis coach Ali Stodart. “This Mount Union team has been producing very well offensively in their last few games. They have scored over 60 points in their last couple games (including a 63-61 win over Juniata Valley on Thursday).
“At halftime we made some changes defensively. Our goal was not to let them score 50. We did a great job in the second half. The two girls that were their leading scorers in the first half actually only scored three points combined in the second half, so, I thought we did a fantastic job.”
With Bellwood-Antis leading 31-29 at halftime, not only did the Lady Blue Devils hold the Mount Union girls scoreless for the first 6:40 of the eight-minute third quarter, the B-A girls expanded their advantage to 43-29 with eight straight points over that period of time. First, Victoria Lombardo buried a trey to open the third period, then Liz Erickson added a basket, Ashley Lechner pumped in another three-pointer, and finally Erickson who led all scorers with 25 points, hit two straight putbacks off rebounds, before Mount Union finally broke their scoreless streak by scoring the final five points of the quarter.
Lombardo scored to begin the fourth quarter, Erickson hit one of three free throws, with Shalee Hunter grabbing the rebound after the miss after the third foul shot and following up with a putback basket. Chelsea Young torched four of four throws from the foul line, without hitting anything but net, Lombardo hit a bucket and Lauren Lender and Ashley Lechner each hit one of two free throws to expand the Lady Blue Devil lead to 20 points 58-38.
Bellwood-Antis broke out to a quick 4-0 lead at the start of the game on two baskets by Erickson but Mount Union came back on a trey by freshman Katrina Woods to lead 18-16 at the end of one quarter. Amanda Ingram nailed a pair of three-pointers to keep the Lady Blue Devils in the game early when the Lady Trojans tried to sag in on Erickson and left the perimeter open, twice giving the B-A girls a lead.
The first quarter was a shootout between Mount Union’s Taylor Walters who scored 11 points and Erickson, who countered with eight.
In the second quarter, Erickson scored first to tie the score, 18-18, and later added a putback after one of her 15 rebounds. Lender converted a bucket and Erickson came right back with another two-pointer off a pretty assist by Lechner as Bellwood-Antis turned a 22-21 Mount Union lead into a 27-22 Bellwood-Antis advantage. While Walters cooled a bit, Martina Kurtz got into the act for the Lady Trojans, scoring all of her 11 points before halftime.
After Kurtz retied the score at 29-29, Erickson scored with 0:07 to play in the half to send the Lady Blue Devils into the locker room up 31-29 at the half.
Walters scored just one basket and one free throw in the second half and Kurtz didn’t score at all after halftime, eventually fouling out with 4:01 to play.
Erickson, who had 10 rebounds and 24 points in the first meeting pulled down 15 boards to go along with her 25 points to lead the Lady Blue Devils.
“She (Liz) has been playing real steady for us for the last couple games, 25 and 15 again,” remarked Stodart about her sophomore post player. “I think that their coach said it best in that ‘you have a workhorse in there, coach.’ I’m glad that I get the chance to coach her for the next couple years.”
Shalee Hunter just missed a double-double, scoring nine points along with 10 rebounds and Victoria Lombardo added seven points and seven rebounds.
Toyia Price, who led the Lady Trojans in the first game with 15 points, has been dismissed from the Mount Union team for disciplinary reasons.
Junior Varsity
Bellwood-Antis ripped Mount Union in the junior varsity game opening up a 22-6 lead at halftime, before winning a 41-20 decision.
Jenna Nevling led the B-A JayVees with 12 points, and Amanda Ingram and Emily Derr each added seven points.
Devin Courson had seven points for Mount Union.
Bellwood-Antis 62 Mount Union 45
Mount Union – Stewart 4 0-0 8, Atherton 0 3-6 3, Walters 6 1-2 14, Kurtz 5 0-0 11, Woods 2 1-2 7, Inch 0 -0- 0, House 1 0-0 2.
