The series began during the 1978-79 wrestling series with a 24-21 Tyrone win. Since that Jan. 5, 1979 match, Bellwood-Antis and Tyrone have met 29 times including Tuesday night\u2019s excursion on the mat at Bellwood.
\nThe Blue Devils shocked the Golden Eagles with a win by Ronnie Wilson over Jacob Smerekar at 152, to begin the dual and ended the night with a 12-0 major decision by once-beaten Ricky Shawley at 145. In between, the match pretty much was Tyrone\u2019s pin parade in the Eagles 54-16 triumph, their 29th straight win in the series.
\nEight pins and a forfeit for the Orange and Black, turned the dual into a runaway, although as the individual weight classes were wrestled, the Blue Devils never backed down, but had little chance against the added experience of the Tyrone grapplers.
\nRonnie Wilson and Jake Smerekar wrestled a scoreless opening period to begin the dual before Smerekar (9-4) escaped after starting the second period on the bottom and registered a takedown to jump into a 3-0 lead. Wilson escaped to trail 3-1 going into the third stanza, where he quickly escaped to slice the Smerekar lead to 3-2. After both wrestlers spent nearly all the remainder of the period looking for an advantage, Wilson (8-6) was able to counter a Smerekar takedown attempt with one of his own at the edge of the mat with just three seconds to go for the 4-3 win.
\n\u201cI thought that Wilson and Smerekar starting off the dual was a bang, a big bang for Bellwood,\u201d said Tyrone coach Blair Packer. \u201cWilson wrestled a smart match. I thought we were a little bit overaggressive at the end and it cost us the match. It was to Wilson\u2019s credit that he pulled it out. Other than that, a lot of the matches went pretty much as I expected. I didn\u2019t expect to pick up as many bonus points as we did tonight. We did pick up a lot of pins. That is the drive that the team has. They are working hard and going after that sort of thing, not just sitting on the lead.\u201d
\nTyrone then quickly moved into their win-by-pin mode getting falls in the next four weight classes to go from a 3-0 team deficit to a 24-3 lead.
\nFirst, Shayne Tate (9-6) displayed a takedown clinic against Garett Wyland at 160. The Tyrone junior garnered three takedowns in the first period, two in the second and two more in the third, before putting Wyland (4-10) on his back for the fall in 5:52. At 171, Justin Schopp (10-5) took just 1:16 to pin T. J. Byers (2-13), Donnie Conrad (8-5) nailed Jimmy Watters (6-10) in 0:39, the quickest fall of the night, at 189, and Brady Williams (4-5) overcame a dangerous effort by Caleb Stevens to pin the B-A sophomore in 3:24. Stevens (3-9) started the scoring with a first period takedown for the initial points and then came back from a 5-2 Williams\u2019 lead to post a 6-5 advantage, before Williams escaped, took Stevens down and worked for the fall.
\nAt 285, B-A soph Cody Smith (1-1) made a middle-period escape stand up for the only score in a 1-0 win over Dustin Weaver (1-7). Smith was in the lineup after the Blue Devils Kris Morder broke an ankle in practice during the week.
\nBellwood-Antis moved freshman Troy Weyant up a weight to 112, and forfeited to A. J. Schopp (15-1) at 103. At 112, Eagle junior Donnie Hunter (2-7) showed the crowd that was a bad move, pinning the lighter Weyant in 1:14 to give Tyrone a 36-6 lead.
\nTyrone and Bellwood-Antis traded wins in the final six weight classes, although the Eagles picked up bonus points in all three with pins, while the Blue Devils got just a major decision for their only bonus point of the dual meet.
\nAt 119, Donnie Partner (3-11) reversed a one-point loss to Tyler Poorman, suffered at the Zeigler Tournament on Jan 6, at Altoona, with a takedown and escape for a 3-1 win in the dual. After a scoreless first stanza, Poorman escaped to begin the second period, but Partner worked a takedown and then escaped in the third period for the victory. In the tournament, Poorman (3-8) triumphed 5-4 to pick up his first victory of his varsity career.
\nTyrone senior T. J. Albright (10-5) used a takedown and nearfall for a 4-0 lead after one period and then added three more back points before recording the fall in 2:46 at 125, over Shane Noye (5-9). At 135, Josh Miller, (5-7) an Eagle sophomore, led 4-0 after one stanza, allowed Cody Fink (5-11) to escape to start the second period, before taking the B-A sophomore to his back for the fall in 2:26. Finally, at 140, J. P. VanAllman (4-6) moved back into the lineup for the Eagles, after an injury kept him out of several duals, took Dustin Pruznak down and recorded the fall in 1:45.
\n\u201cWe kind of started getting on track against Philipsburg and here with this match tonight,\u201d said Packer. \u201cAnd if we get keep this going, if the kids can keep getting aggressive, I think we will be alright for the rest of the season.
\nTyrone improves to 2-3 after a murderous start to the season that included duals against Triple-A powers Indian Valley and Lewistown and Double-A Mount Union in three of their first four dual meets.
\nIn addition to Wilson, Smith and Partner, Bellwood-Antis (2-4) picked up wins at 130, where Timmy Collier won in overtime and at 145, where Shawley (17-1) used a takedown and four sets of nearfall points for a 12-0 victory over Tyrone sophomore Jeremy Barlett (2-10). Collier (3-10) trailed Anthony Romano 4-3 after one period and 6-5 after two, but tied the score on a penalty point and then used a takedown in overtime for the win. Romano (2-6) had a pair of takedowns in the first period and a reversal in the second stanza.
\n\u201cWe just ask that the kids perform the best they can, and tonight, I think they did that.\u201d said Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. \u201cEven though we lost on the scoreboard pretty badly, they stepped up there, there weren\u2019t any give-me\u2019s. I\u2019m pretty happy with the effort that all our kids gave tonight. Tyrone has a good quality team with a lot of good quality wrestlers. We knew coming in that they were going to be sound across the board. For us to go out and hang with them in a couple instances, we\u2019re proud of them. Tyrone has a quality program and it\u2019s nice to wrestle people like that, because it gives us an idea where we need to be.\u201d
\nTyrone breezed to a 70-17 win in the junior high dual prior to the varsity match.
\nIn jumping out to a 55-0 lead, Tyrone got forfeits for Dylan Weston (80) and Robbie Sellers (110), pins by Mark McMonagle (85) Tyler Osterhout (90), Christian Getz (95), James Weston (115), Jeremy Miller (138), Cody Smith (155), and Kirby Lawrence (250), a major decision by Ronnie Garbinsky (100) and regular decisions by Chase Weaver (105), Doug Rudy (122), Issac Walk (130) and Rickie Smith (185).
\nBellwood-Antis picked up wins by pin by Travis Taylor (145) and Trey Campbell (165) and a technical fall by Gerald Price (210).
