It was the second straight loss for the Lady Eagles, who fell to 2-4 with a home game against Bishop Guilfoyle on tap tonight.
But while the point differential was uncharacteristic of the Lady Eagles under first-year coach Luke Rhoades, Tyrone’s effort was not. The Lady Eagles were within three of the Lady Tigers at 18-15 early in the second quarter before starting post Liz Tepsic was tagged with her third foul, sending the 5-foot-11 senior to the bench at the 6:50 mark.
That started a 13-1 Hollidaysburg run that 34-16 with 2:44 left until halftime.
“We executed our game plan to perfection early, and to lose Liz like that really hurt us,” said Rhoades. “She is our big girl, and we don’t really have any other size to match up with a team like Hollidaysburg. That definitely took us out of our game plan, but the girls that went in played pretty well.”
The Lady Eagles trailed 35-22 at halftime and never again got the deficit below 20 points. Only part of the problem was Tyrone’s deficiency on offense, where the Lady Eagles made just 10 of 37 shots from the floor, including a 1-for-6 slump in the fourth quarter.
The other part was the raw talent of the Lady Tigers, who received scoring contributions from 10 different players, led by scrappy senior Erika Matko, who netted a game-high 16. Most of her damage was done in transition off Tyrone turnovers.
Six-foot junior Amanda Ottaway added 12 and 5-foot-11 junior Taylor Griffith had 13.
Rhoades was pleased with his team’s work defensively on Ottaway, who was the centerpiece of Tyrone’s box-and-1 defense to start the game. And even after the Lady Eagles went to a 2-3 zone and man-to-man later on, they were able to contain the Lady Tigers’ leading scorer.
But it came with a price.
“There were times when we worked so hard on defense and we would end up ciming down and turning the ball over and we wouldn’t even get a look at the basket,” said Rhoades. “It doesn’t pay to work that hard on defense and not get a shot off. In the second half, we had five straight possessions where we didn’t get a shot. We played good defense, boxed out, got the rebound, and then came down and turned it over.”
And that was why things looked so easy for the Lady Tigers at times over the last two quarters. A 14-1 run in the third, followed by a 17-0 run to start the fourth had the Mercy Rule’s running clock ticking before the game was done.
Kayla Corle led the Lady Eagles with nine points, while Kassie Faretta added seven off the bench.
HOLLIDAYSBURG 69 TYRONE 31
HOLLIDAYSBURG – Destefano 2 2-2 4; Ottaway 4 4-8 12; Gildea 1 0-0 2; Matko 7 1-4 16; Stahl 0 0-4 0; Griffith 5 1-1 13; Boorne 1 0-0 2; Maloney 1 0-0 3; Ergler 4 0-0 9; Moyer 2 0-0 4.
