Instead, it was the way they happened.
Against deeper and physically superior competition, it seemed no matter how hard the Lady Eagles worked, it was never good enough.
That much was evident from the start against the Lady Marauders.
BG led 25-6 after the first quarter – a period in which the Lad Marauders shot 9-for-18 while Tyrone went 3-for-9 – and struggled to find breathing room, let alone scoring opportunities, against Guilfoyle’s full-court pressure defense.
“They way BG played tonight is where we want to get to,” said Rhoades. “We’re just going to keep working hard, and we’ll get there.”
Working hard under Rhoades has not been a problem. Last night, Tyrone pulled out every defense it could muster, using man-to-man, 2-3 zone, box-and-1 and a full-court zone press. But at the end of the day, the Lady Marauders were a team with multiple players who could fill up the nets, while Tyrone, at least for now, was not.
Tyrone managed to connect on just 8 of 30 shots from the floor. But considering the way BG smothered the ball and attacked passing lanes defensively, even getting 30 shots off was something of an accomplishment.
Meanwhile, the Lady Marauders made 17 of 37 in the first half alone, when they built an insurmountable 43-11 lead. Five-foot-11 Mary Forr was at the center of it all, scoring a game-high 13 points. Christie Conrad added 12, as seven Lady Marauders made their mark in the scoring column.
BG opened the game on a 9-0 run before Tyrone got its first field goal on a lay up by Kayla Corle at the 4:38 mark of the first quarter. The Lady Marauders also closed the period on a 9-0 run, and outscored the Lady Eagles 13-2 through the first 5:15 of the second.
Tyrone never got onto the board in the third quarter until Lindsey Christine scored with 20 seconds left. That ended a 12-0 run by the Lady Marauders. By then, it was 55-13.
Tyrone turned the all over 19 times to BG’s five, and never found any rhythm offensively.
The Lady Eagles dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the MAC, while BG improved to 5-0 and 3-0 in the MAC. With the exception of a 52-37 win over Central Cambria in the season opener, the Lady Marauders have won every game by at least 20 points.
BISHOP GUILFOYLE 61 TYRONE 19
BISHOP GUILFOYLE – Forr 6 1-2 13; D.
