With 12 turnovers in the first half, eight in the first quarter alone, Tyrone fell behind fast and never caught up.
After an opening 12-3 run by the Wildcats, Tyrone struggled to stop the three as Central Mountain managed to put up 26 points in just the first quarter alone. If there was anyone who could spark this Tyrone team, it was Steve Catich, the “go-to” guy this season to bring Tyrone back into the game.
With a three-pointer from Catich and another trey added from Jamie Levinson, Tyrone trailed 20-6 with just 3:21 to go as Coach George Gripp finally called a timeout to settle the 13-3 run from the Wildcats.
Tyrone continued to struggle the rest of the first quarter, trailing Central Mountain 26-12 and gaining just five points from Catich and turning the ball over eight times.
Tyrone had a lot of room to cover and they had to do it fast to get back into the game.
Gripp switched up the offense a little in the second quarter, throwing Kyle Updyke and Ethan Etters into the mix. They played solid for the most part, as Etters led off Tyrone with a nice runner from just outside the key and Updyke added four points before the half was up.
Tyrone still struggled with turnovers, adding four more to the previous eight from the first quarter. The first game jitters seemed to have the best of Tyrone as they went into the half down 39-24, giving up shots all over the perimeter.
The Wildcats completely shut down Tyrone’s offense in the first half holding the Golden Eagles to just 24 points and holding Catich to seven points as well.
As the game moved on, Tyrone just couldn’t control the tempo on defense, trading baskets in the third quarter as they scored just nine points to the Wildcats eight. It was an Eli Hanna quarter for Central Mountain as he accounted for six of their eight to keep the Wildcats ahead of Tyrone, 48-32 after three quarters of play.
The fourth quarter showed potential for Tyrone, despite the fact of losing the game, as Catich finally busted out of the gates and racked up 12 of Tyrone’s 14 points in the fourth quarter. Too little, too late was the saying for Tyrone, Monday night as the Wildcats cruised on to win, 61-46 in a one-sided game.
Tyrone drops the opener and will head into Bellefonte with an 0-1 record and look to forget the loss and start a new slate. One game will not hurt, but a lot will kill the season. Tyrone has a lot of potential and showed it tonight. Etters played outstanding defense, Updyke showed his offensive threat, and Catich exploded for 12 of his game-high 19 in one quarter. The offensive threat is there, but the turnovers are what lost the game tonight as they outnumbered the Wildcats 19-9.
The Central Mountain Wildcats improve to 2-1 behind Eli Hanna and Vinnie Mauck as they combined for 26 of the Cats’ 61 points. The two combined for five treys and slashed through Tyrone’s defense on almost every possession.
A tough loss, but a loss can only be improved upon. Look for a great game in Tyrone, Tuesday night against Bellefonte, at 7:30 (6:00 for Jayvee).
Updyke opening strong
for Tyrone Jayvee
Kyle Updyke could not be stopped at Central Mountain as he lit up the Wildcats for 14 points, including four triples alone. Updyke was given a lot of space early on in the game as he knocked down three of his four trey’s in the first half alone.
With 13 from Ethan Etters and 14 from Updyke, Tyrone slid past Central Mountain in a close one, 47-40.
Mark Mitchell’s coaching debut resulted in a victory, as they head back to Tyrone tomorrow night against Bellefonte with a fresh 1-0 start.
Central Mountain 61 Tyrone 46
Tyrone 12 12 8 14 – 46
Central Mountain 26 13 9 13 – 61
Tyrone – Catich 9 0-0 19, Morrow 4 0-0 8, Levinson 2 0-0 5, Brooks 2 0-0 4, Updyke 2 0-0 4, Branstetter 1 2-2 4 Etters 1 0-0 2.
