But we didn’t come down here just to be happy – we came here to win. We want to win games like this.”
After the effort Tyrone put forth against the experienced Lady Raiders, that time may come sooner than later.
“It’s coming,” Rhoades said. “It’s exciting. Something exciting is going to happen soon.”
Part of Tyrone’s success came from making shots. Kayla Corle tied for the game lead with 12 points, while senior Liz Tepsic added 11 in her second straight double-digit game. Lindsey Christine netted nine as six of the seven Lady Eagles that saw action contributed points.
The other part was in containing Bellefonte’s scorers. Point guard Angie Proper was limited to a quiet 12, while post Missy Clouser – who for two seasons had made a living dominating the paint against the Lady Eagles – scored only seven.
Tyrone did it with an active 2-3 matchup zone that made finding open looks difficult for the Lady Raiders.
“We really found their shooters,” Rhoades said. “We gave a pretty complete effort defensively. We gave up very few second shots and rebounded much better.”
Tyrone trailed 22-17 at halftime and 34-29 heading into the fourth quarter. There, the Lady Eagles had it as close as four, but missed a golden opportunity on a possession late where they had a chance to cut it to a one-basket game. On the possession, Tyrone missed an open layup and missed a read for an open basket inside.
“People have to realize who we’re playing and how hard we’re playing,” said Rhoades. “Tomorrow, we’re going to focus on our effort and be proud of our effort, but we’re not going to be satisfied. I think the girls are excited to finally get a chance to play at home.”
That will come Thursday when the Juniata Valley Lady Hornets visit Tyrone Area High School.
Bellefonte 45 Tyrone 41
TYRONE 9 8 12 12 – 41
BELLEFONTE 11 11 12 11 – 45
TYRONE – Tepsic 5 1-2 11; Turiano 2 0-3 4; Christine 2 4-4 9; Corle 4 3-4 12; Faretta 1 0-0 2; Garbinsky 1 0-0 3; Kobuck 0 0-0 0.
