{"id":39991,"date":"2006-11-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-11-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/v3\/?p="},"modified":"2006-11-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2006-11-16T00:00:00","slug":"Community-Calendar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/?p=39991","title":{"rendered":"Community Calendar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TASD opens doors to public for<br \/>\nAmerican Education Week<br \/>\nIn recognition of American Education Week, the Tyrone Area School District is opening its doors to the community and offering citizens a chance to visit and view contemporary public education.<br \/>\nVisitation for the elementary, middle, and high schools is scheduled for Friday, November 17 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and again from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Parents, guardians and other community members who are interested in seeing what an average day is like at the Tyrone Area Schools are welcome to visit. Individuals do not need to know a student, teacher or faculty member who is present during this time.<br \/>\nThose interested may enter the school\u2019s main office on November 17. Individuals will be asked to sign in and will be given a visitor\u2019s pass. If visitors know the teacher of a particular student, they may visit that classroom. Visitors may also choose to go to a classroom based on a certain subject or activity that is being taught at that time.<\/p>\n<p>BCHWC meeting<br \/>\nThe Blair County Health and Welfare Council will meet at 8 a.m. on Friday, November 17 in the Trzeciak Suite in the Education Center of the Altoona Regional Health System, Bon Secours Hospital Campus. The purpose of the Blair County Health and Welfare Council is to advocate for and promote the general health and welfare of Blair County residents.<br \/>\nThe focus of our November meeting will be the implementation of the Blair County community needs assessment, council restructuring and various agency updates. The Health and Welfare Council would also like to remind previous members that membership dues must be submitted to the Blair County Human Services office by the end of November. Membership is open to any individual or organization interested in participating in the activities of the council. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like more information about the Blair County Health and Welfare Council please contact Randy Potter at the Blair County Human Services Office, 423 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg PA 16648 or call 693-3112.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday bazaar<br \/>\nA holiday bazaar will be held at the Warriors Mark Fire Hall, Route 550, on Saturday, November 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be crafts, baked goods and homemade soup. Lunch will be available.<\/p>\n<p>Thrive!<br \/>\nThrive! is a radical praise and worship gathering for youth and young adults in Tyrone and the region. Thrive! is scheduled for November 18 at 7 p.m. at Joshua House with Ron DePriest ministering. Thrive! is also scheduled for December 15  at 7 p.m. at Joshua House with Tony Barboza ministering.<\/p>\n<p>Special music<br \/>\nThe Jacobs Brothers of Dillsburg will appear at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bellwood on November 18 at 7 p.m. The Jacobs Brothers, veterans of gospel music, are dedicated to the ministry of spreading the Gospel through music. Since 1962 the group has traveled millions of miles, produced more than 50 albums and hosted many international tours.<br \/>\nGrace Christmas bazaar<br \/>\nGrace Baptist Church will hold its Christmas bazaar on November 18 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the church\u2019s multi-purpose room.<\/p>\n<p>Cheese balls<br \/>\nThe United Methodist Women of the Bald Eagle United Methodist Church are currently taking orders for cheeseballs. Orders are due by November 19.<br \/>\nPick up will be at the Church Fellowship Hall on Thursday, November 30 after 4 p.m.<br \/>\nOrder by calling: Dot Spanelli at 684-2510; Betty Cowfer at 684-3767; Pat DeArment at 684-4548 or Eleanor O\u2019Brien at 686-0562.<\/p>\n<p>Olde Fashioned Hymn sing<br \/>\nFirst Assembly of God Church, 12th St. and Blair Avenue, will be putting on another one of its very popular Olde Fashioned Hymn Sings on Sunday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. As always, it\u2019s free and the public is welcome to come and hear the great Gospel music.<\/p>\n<p>Hymn sing<br \/>\nThe Grazierville UMC will host a Hymn Sing on Sunday, November 19 at 7 p.m.<br \/>\nSunday worship is held at 9:15 a.m. All are welcome. For more information call the pastor at the church office at 684-5801 or 684-0179. <\/p>\n<p>Tyrone Salvation Army<br \/>\nThe Tyrone Salvation Army Service Center will be closed November 20, 21, 22 and 23 due to Thanksgiving activities they will be involved in. The center will be open November 27 during regular hours.<\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving food bank distributions<br \/>\nThe Tyrone Area Food Bank will hold Thanksgiving distributions for two days, Monday, November 20 and Tuesday, November 21. Distribution will be the same as last year. Those individuals whose last name begins with A through M are scheduled for Monday and those whose last name begins with N through Z are scheduled for pick up on Tuesday. Hours are 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. both days. Anyone with questions can contact the church at 684-3341.<\/p>\n<p>Community Thanksgiving Dinner<br \/>\nThe Community Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored by Joshua House and the Salvation Army will be held at Joshua House, 123 West 10th St., November 21 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Take-outs are available. For more information, call Joshua House at 684-2032. <\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving eve service at WMUMC<br \/>\nCrisp blue sky days. The faintly sweet smell of wood smoke. Choosing the perfect pumpkin. The greatest joy is noticing the small things, and giving thanks. This season, bring the family and join in at the Warriors Mark United Methodist Church for a time of thanksgiving. Rediscover the contentment that only comes through a grateful heart. WMUMC is celebrating Thanksgiving with a Community Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday, November 22 at 7 p.m. Guest speaker for the evening will be Vance Hart from the Spruce Creek UM Church. The WMUMC is handicapped accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving dinner<br \/>\nOnce again, DJ\u2019s Cafe in Tyrone will provide the community with a free Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day. Staff and volunteers prepare all the meals on-site and then deliver them free of charge to families. Families are also welcome to join the staff at DJ\u2019s for a sit down, home-cooked meal.<br \/>\nThe Thanksgiving meal includes: roasted turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied yams, corn, cranberry sauce, roll and butter, dessert and milk. Those interested in ordering a meal should call 684-7851 or visit DJ\u2019s at 2068 Columbia Ave. in Tyrone.<br \/>\nTree Decorating Contest<br \/>\nOnce again this year, as part of The Tyrone Victorian Christmas, a tree decorating contest has been scheduled. A \u201cwalkway of trees\u201d will be held at the Tyrone Armory. The contest is open to businesses, clubs, organizations, individuals, families and anyone else who may want to participate.<br \/>\nAll trees must be artificial. The Tyrone Victorian Christmas Committee has 20 trees that can be used on a first-call basis. The trees can be put up and decorated between Nov. 27 and Nov. 30, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. All trees must be decorated by 3 p.m. on Nov. 30.<br \/>\nTrees will be judged in five categories: Victorian, Best of Show, Best in Representation of Business, Club or Organization, Most Original and Most Traditional.<br \/>\nTrees can be taken down between Dec. 4 and 7 from 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Committee noted that it cannot be responsible for items on a tree. Participants may want to avoid using heirloom items as decorations. To register for the contest, contact Scott Collinash at 814-684-0517.<\/p>\n<p>B-A Historical Society<br \/>\nA meeting of the Bellwood Antis Historical Society will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 27 at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library. A descendant of Tommy Coleman will be speaking. The public is invited.<\/p>\n<p>Meet the Eagles<br \/>\nThe Tyrone Basketball Booster Club is sponsoring a Meet the Eagles event on Tuesday, November 28 at 7 p.m. in the High School gymnasium. Individuals will get a chance to meet the Tyrone basketball players, grades seven through 12, and their coaches. Come out and show support for these athletes. There will also be order forms for the Tyrone basketball apparel.<\/p>\n<p>Yuletyme Christmas Parade and Celebration<br \/>\nEveryone is invited to participate in the Eighth Annual Tyrone Yuletyme Christmas Celebration sponsored by the Tyrone Yuletyme Christmas Committee and the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce. The Annual Tyrone Yuletyme Christmas Parade is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1. A tree lighting is scheduled just before the parade at 6 p.m. The parade will commence at 6:15 p.m.<br \/>\nImmediately following the parade, join Santa for hot chocolate and cookies. The visit with Santa will be held at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory.<br \/>\nThe bad weather date is Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. The events will also be moved to Saturday, Dec. 2 if there is a conflict with Tyrone Area Football on the evening of Dec. 1.<br \/>\nThe Eighth Annual Tyrone Yuletyme Christmas Craft Show is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.<br \/>\nVisitors will enjoy holiday shopping through the craft show and the shops in Tyrone. Fun-filled activities begin Thursday and Friday evening which lead up to Saturday\u2019s events, including: carriage rides, a tree decorating contest, children\u2019s crafts and activities, food vendors and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast With Santa<br \/>\nThe Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Fourth Annual \u201cBreakfast\u201d with Santa at Tyrone Colonial Courtyard on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. Santa will have goodies for each child. Tickets can be purchased at the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce office, 1004 Logan Ave., Tyrone, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information about \u201cBreakfast With Santa\u201d contact the Chamber at 684-0736.<\/p>\n<p>High Tea at Trinity Episcopal Church<br \/>\nPurple Iris, one of the last of artist Andy Moore\u2019s water colors, will be featured at the third annual High Tea at the Trinity Episcopal Church. The gorgeous painting, which is 15 inches by 25 inches, will be offered in a raffle. The painting was previously on display at the Tyrone Hospital and was left to the church by Andy to use as a fundraiser. Andy, who died in late May, was a well-known artist previously living in Birmingham. This is the last of Andy\u2019s works to be offered to the public.<br \/>\nThe popular high tea will take place on December 2 at 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church on Washington Avenue. Tickets for this event are sold out, but individuals are still encouraged to purchase chances for the original painting by Andy Moore.
