\nWhile sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, think of all the things you have to be thankful for. Remember this Christmas to share the holiday spirit with others and make a New Year\u2019s resolution to help those less fortunate.
\nThe upcoming holiday season gives families a wonderful opportunity to help the children of New York in 2007. It\u2019s time again to consider volunteering to be a host family for The Fresh Air Fund. Volunteers agree to host an inner-city child for two weeks during the summer.
\nBy volunteering as a host family in 2007, the spirit of the holidays can continue throughout the year.
\nOne child said of his experience with the program, \u201cWe did a lot of fun stuff in the country. We fed chickens and caught frogs.\u201d
\nMany of these children never have the opportunity to leave the traffic, noise and bright lights of the city. A trip to a rural area is a treat to someone who has never had a chance to see the stars, visit a farm or run barefoot in the grass.
\nPlus, volunteering as a family provides a chance to spend time together and to introduce children to volunteerism and community service.
\nMany children from New York City have visited this area during the summer through The Fresh Air Fund program. Each year, the program asks individuals and families to volunteer their time and open their homes to provide a unique opportunity for children from the city.
\nEscaping to a small, rural community, even for a short period of time, can be a very exciting, educational and beneficial time for these kids.
\nSince 1877, New York City children growing up in low-income neighborhoods have experienced the joys of summer in suburban and small-town communities through The Fresh Air Fund\u2019s Friendly Town Program. By welcoming visitors into their homes during the summer, host families give Fresh Air children a break from the sometimes dangerous, hot and crowded city streets.
\nWith the new year just around the corner, families can resolve to volunteer their time and help a child experience a small-town summer.
