Last month the Church of the Good Shepherd welcomed a new pastor when Rev. Dr. Susan Halverstadt was reassigned to the Tyrone church.
\nPastor Susan began her work here in the area on July 1, coming from Christ United Methodist Church in Shippensburg.
\nThis is Pastor Susan\u2019s first time in the Tyrone area having worked in ministry primarily in the Central Pennsylvania Conference, including several years in the Williamsport area.
\nAfter graduating in 1970 from St. Paul\u2019s School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri, Pastor Susan was ordained in the Missouri West Conference for several years.
\nShe eventually went back to school and became a doctor of chiropractic, having her own private practice.
\nBack in the ministry, she returned to Pennsylvania to be closer to family.
\n\u201cA lot of my work over the years has been in healing, spiritually, physically and emotionally,\u201d said Pastor Susan, \u201cI feel called to be here and I\u2019m really excited to be here.\u201d
\nBorn in Wellsboro, Pastor Susan grew up in Pontiac, Michigan and lived many years in the midwest in Kansas City, Missouri and Nebraska. In the early 80s she lived in Colorado.
\nSince returning to Central Pennsylvania, she has served churches in the Williamsport area, in York County and in Shippensburg.
\nPastor Susan has two adult children: a son, Brad and his family in Limestoneville, Pa, near Lewisburg, and a daughter, Angela and her family in Milford, Nebraska, near Lincoln. She also has a daughter, Alexa, who will attend senior high school here in Tyrone.
\nChurch services at the Church of the Good Shepherd are held at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning with church school at 10:10 a.m. for all ages.
\nThere are a variety of activities at the church including small group ministries, Bible study, youth group, scouting and Breaking Bread Ministry. Anyone wishing to know more about church activities can contact the office at 684-2472.
\nAnother upcoming event, sponsored by Church of the Good Shepherd and Bald Eagle United Methodist Church is \u201cBurn: A festival igniting hearts for God\u201d.
\nTogether, the churches are planning a Christian festival on Church of the Good Shepherd grounds for Saturday, August 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. Admission will be free along with free musical entertainment. There will also be booths from area churches, as well as Christian organizations, selling food, making crafts or playing games.
