Another season is well under way at the Fort Roberdeau historic site in Sinking Valley.
\nThe season began in May with daily tours and will continue through October. There are number of highlights scheduled for this season.
\n On Sunday, June 11, Family Fun at the Fort is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m.
\nA release from Fort Roberdeau encouraged people to \u201cflee to the Fort for patriots\u2019 stories and songs, 18th Century games, and sundrie other diversions.\u201d
\nStars over Fort Roberdeau is set for June 23 at 9 p.m. It\u2019s astronomy night, led by a teacher of earth and space science. The press release noted Sinking Valley is the darkest and best place for viewing the night sky in Central Pennsylvania. The rain date is June 24.
\nAn Independence Day celebration is scheduled for July 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A special musical program, \u201cWagons, Ho!\u201d is scheduled along with other musical entertainment.
\nRevolutionary War Days are scheduled for July 8 and 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature the annual reenactment, featuring an 18th century camp, demonstrations, fashion show, crafts, food and a 3 p.m. attack on the fort. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3 to 11.
\nYoung Patriots Day will be held on July 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event is for kids ages 8 to 11. They will spend a 1778-style day in costume as a colonial child, guarding the fort, playing 18th century games, going on a spying expedition and making a craft. The cost is $20 per child. The program is available on other dates for youth groups.
\nA patriotic band concert is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. The Hollidaysburg Alumni Community Band will perform.
\nAccording to information on its web site (www.fortroberdeau.org) Fort Roberdeau Historic Site and Natural Area is owned by Blair County and managed by the Fort Roberdeau Association, a non-profit educational organization.
\nThe web site noted the stockade and cabins were reconstructed in 1976 as a Blair County Bicentennial Project. The site includes acres of fields and forest, with nature trails and picnic facilities.
\nAccording to the Fort\u2019s web information, the lower level of the 1858 barn contains the Visitor Center and the Acorn Shop. The upper level is the site of summer theater presentations and concerts.
\nOther structures within the park include a 19th century farmhouse where special programs are held, and White Oak Hall, a multi-purpose facility for conferences and educational programs.
\nThe Fort\u2019s web information noted White Oak Hall is also available for meetings and social functions for a reasonable fee. Trails and outdoor areas may be used year-round from 8 a.m. to sunset. The Fort and Visitor Center are open from May through October. Regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday and Monday from 1 to 5 p.m.
