For the second year, the Dover Millionaires teamed up with Tyrone Elementary School children to collect can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh.
\nArea residents were also asked to help by saving tabs for children to take to school.
\nMembers of the Dover Millionaires have been collecting the tabs off of aluminum cans for about seven years now, averaging around 2,500 pounds of tabs each year. These tabs help defray the costs of housing family members of patients at Children\u2019s Hospital.
\nDover Millionaires President, Don Miller, said the group got the idea to collect tabs from a group of race fans from Towanda, Pa.
\n\u201cThey brought us tabs while we were in Dover,\u201d said Miller.
\nAfter that, the group began organizing their own tab collection here in Tyrone. Last year, the group decided to enlist some help for the project and asked Tyrone Area Elementary students and teachers to participate in the collection. Students were asked to save can tabs and bring them to school. Five-gallon water jugs were set up in each homeroom for students to deposit their tabs. Preschool through fifth-grade students began collecting tabs earlier in the year and continued through April.
\nTogether, the school collected a total of 870 pounds of can tabs this year for the Ronald McDonald House.
\nOnce collected, the tabs are turned in for scrap weight and the money is forwarded directly to the Ronald McDonald House. Miller explained this amount adds up to around $500.
\nMiller said, \u201cWe appreciate the help from the teachers and administration for letting us do this.\u201d
\nHe added that collecting that many tabs really adds up. There are approximately 1,263 tabs in one pound, so 1,000 pounds would equal 1,400,000 tabs.
\nThis is the second year the group has included the school in the collection process and Miller said they hope to continue working with them every year.
\nAs an added incentive for the students, the Dover Millionaires offer a pizza party for the homeroom that collects the most tabs in each grade.
\nThis year\u2019s pizza party winners were: Ms. Rice\u2019s K4 class; Mrs. Raffetto\u2019s kindergarten class; Mrs. Rhoades\u2019 first graders; Mrs. Smithmyer\u2019s second grade class; Mr. Mitchell\u2019s third graders; in fourth grade, Mrs. McMillan\u2019s class and in fifth grade, Ms. Shultz\u2019s class.
\nThe classroom that collected the most tabs overall was Mrs. Smithmyer\u2019s second grade. Their class collected 76 pounds of tabs.
\nMrs. McMillan\u2019s class was a close second, collecting 71.4 pounds.
\nOverall, it was a successful year and a great effort on the part of the elementary students.
\nParents and students are encouraged to continue to save tabs at home and work for next year.
