Tyrone Hospital officials announced that Brandy Bergum, RN is the recipient of Tyrone Hospital\u2019s Spirit of Nursing Award. The announcement was made at a celebration held for hospital employees during National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week May 6-13.
\nThe hospital\u2019s nursing department instituted the award this year and will grant the award on an annual basis to a nurse that demonstrates outstanding performance. The Spirit of Nursing Award recipient receives a bouquet of flowers and a trophy.
\nBergum said she was speechless when she was notified she was selected for the Spirit of Nursing Award.
\n\u201cThis is the first time in my life that I have received any type of award. It is such an honor.\u201d
\nBergum, a resident of West Decatur in Clearfield County, has been employed at Tyrone Hospital for more than four years. She joined the hospital as a nursing student extern and later joined full-time as a nurse on the medical surgical unit. She later moved to the obstetrics unit\/nursery where she is currently employed.
\nBergum said she believes laughter is the best medicine and in addition to excellent clinical care that she tries to bring a smile to each of her patients.
\n\u201cA smile can do a lot for a patient and that is the real reward, doing everything I can for my patients, including bringing a smile to each.\u201d
\nLinda Wertz, RN, Director of Inpatient Services and Al Godissart, RN, Director of Outpatient Services at Tyrone Hospital said the Spirit of Nursing Award is special because the recipient is selected by their peers.
\n\u201cMembers of the nursing staff submit the names of fellow nurses that they think should be honored with the award. It is through this process that the nursing staff selects one nurse to honor,\u201d said Wertz.
\nNurses may qualify for the award if they provide direct patient care, have a compressive knowledge about the art of nursing, demonstrate a commitment to giving excellent nursing care, serve as an advocate to patients and families, and serve as a role model for other nursing staff.
\n\u201cMrs. Wertz said Ms. Bergum always has a smile on her face and is known for her \u2018can do\u2019 attitude. She is greatly appreciated.
