On Tuesday at Tyrone, the two local schools battled to a split, with the Bellwood-Antis boys claiming a 97-53 win and the Tyrone girls handing the Lady Blue Devils an 86-64 defeat, when the dust had all settled.
In both meets, there was a abundance of fantastic individual efforts.
In the victory by the Lady Eagles (4-1), veterans Emily Ingle and Liz Tepsic and Katie Schreckengost and outstanding ninth grader Kayla Patton combined for 11 victories between them to lead the Tyrone girls.
Tepsic won four events (100 intermediate hurdles, 300 low hurdles, long jump and triple jump), Ingle won three (800, 1600 and 3200 runs), and Schreckengost (discus and javelin) and Patton (100 and 200 dashes) won two events each.
Senior Marissa Hoover added a victory in the shot out.
In addition to the first places, the Lady Eagles received a bunch of points from the supporting cast that contributed greatly to the Tyrone win.
Francesca Lambert was second in the 800, 1600 and 3200, Patton was second in the 400, Hoover was second in the javelin, Emily Lloyd was second in the triple jump and third in the high jump and 100 Im hurdles, Sarah Cox was second in the shot put, Kayla Corle was third in the long jump, Ashley Turnbaugh was third in the discus, and Samantha Friday was third in the pole vault.
“Iwas real happy with some of our younger kids,” said Tyrone coach Tony Yaniello. “We have some outstanding individuals, but we received some good efforts from the youngers girls, as well. You have to get the seconds and thirds if you expect to win against a quality team like Bellwood. We have had good girls teams at tyrone for a long time, but we didn’t have the numbers to develpo the depth we have on this team.”
Chelsea Wilson was a double winner for the Bellwood-Antis girls (400 and high jump), April Ruehle won the pole vault and Bellwood-Antis (5-5) swept all three relays, but couldn’t match either the Lady Eagles individual efforts, or their depth in securing additional points via second and third place finishes.
“The meet really should have been closer,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Julia Roseborough. “Take nothing away from a great effort by the Tyrone girls, we probably wouldn’t have beaten them anyway, but we were without our best distance runner and lost our best sprinter and hurdler after her first race with a quad pull. We lost a couple races that were practically dead heats that meant a switch in points earned, although the final times didn’t indicate it.
“Chelsea Wilson had a nice day with wins in both the 400 and high jump and the three relay teams did a good job.
“We knew Tyrone was going to get their share of first places, but our game plan was to win the relays, which we did, and take a lot of seconds and thirds, which we weren’t able to accomplish.”
On the boys side, the situation was reversed almost exactly. It was the Bellwood-Antis boys (8-2) with the individual brilliance and the depth to pull out the victory.
Brandon Pruznak won the 200 and 400 dashes and the long jump, Adam Mueller took both the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles and Tony DelGrosso set personal bests in winning the shot put and javelin and also won the discus.
Brandon Hatch won the 800 and the Blue Devil 400 relay team of Dustin Harris, Evan Celmo, Drew Saylor and Jon Davila, the 1600 team of Mueller, Celmo, Harris and Hatch, and the 3200 team of Jeremy Tomchick, Dustin Pruznak, Eli Colyer and Hatch were all victorious.
“The kids did real well, a lot of personal bests,” explained Bellwood-Antis boys coach Nick Lovrich. “That’s what we preach to the kids-to work hard to improve in each meet. We expect them to get the seconds and thirds that often win track meets. That is very important. The relays are something we try hard to win. We got a break in the 400 relay today and just went out and took the lead in the others. It’s a shift of 10 points for the winner in each, and zero points for the other team. That can make a big difference in a close meet.”
Aaron Houck (1600 and 3200( and Trey Brockett (high jump and triple jump) were double winners for the Tyrone boys, while Johnny Franco won the 100 and Philip Kreckle won the pole vault.
“We didn’t match up very well against the Bellwood boys,: said Yaniello. “Despite that, we also didn’t seem to perform as wel,k as we are capable. We haven’t had much time to practice and our skill level showed up in our younger guys. We hope to catch up and do better against Bellwood and the other teams that will be at the conference meet at Bellwood on Monday.
“Trey Brckett and Johnny Franco had great efforts against Bellwood.
“We can win the boys championship in our division with a win over Philipsburg on Thursday, Bellwood is not in our division. The Tyrone girls can also win, but will need some help, since they lost earlier to Bald Eagle Area.”
Tyrone will host Philipsburg-Osceola and Huntingdon on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.
Bellwood-Antis will host Juniata Valley on Thursday beginning at 3:45 p.m.
Boys
Bellwood-Antis 97 Tyrone 53
100 Dash – 1.
