Each month, a growing number of neighborhood watch groups meet throughout the county to discuss concerns about safety, crime and drug activity within their own communities.
\nThursday night\u2019s Antis Township meeting brought out residents of Beechwood Drive, who were on hand to discuss the organization of a neighborhood watch group in their area.
\nMike Seidel addressed the board of supervisors, saying residents of the Beechwood Drive neighborhood got together and decided to start a neighborhood watch.
\nHe said residents will meet on Monday with Blair Senior Services representative Maureen Adams and a state trooper. Everyone in the neighborhood is welcome to attend.
\nLeo Matuszewski, also a Beechwood Drive resident, said neighbors became concerned after a recent drug bust, where Benjamin and Wesley Grove, along with several others, were arrested on drug charges.
\nMatuszewski said his neighborhood is a nice place to live, but he was shocked, when he returned home late last month to see six police cars and people all around the Grove residence.
\nHe added, \u201cWe\u2019re not a vigilante group, we just want to keep watch in our neighborhood.\u201d
\nSeidel asked the board if they would be willing to donate neighborhood watch signs to the organization to be placed on Beechwood Drive.
\n\u201cThere are some other groups in the township that have been organizing neighborhood watch groups,\u201d said Chairman Ray Amato, \u201cOnce all the groups get together, we\u2019ll purchase the signs and the township will put them up.\u201d
\nAmato added that the board purchased and put up signs for the Tipton neighborhood watch group and it is working out well.
\nAccording to Matuszewski, Monday\u2019s meeting was planned for Beechwood Drive residents, but the group would be more than happy to expand. There are only 11 properties in the secluded Beechwood Drive area.
\n\u201cI think this is great but I caution you to watch that this isn\u2019t too small,\u201d said supervisor Ken Hostler, \u201cI think a larger group might be better.\u201d
\nSupervisor Bob Smith suggested that once all the area neighborhood watch groups are established, they may want to organize and get together as a whole township.
\nAs this type of neighborhood watch group becomes more popular throughout the area, a countywide effort has already been made to unite the various groups.
\nAccording to Assistant Director of National Senior Service Corps Programs for Blair Senior Services, Inc., Maureen Adams, these meetings provide \u201can opportunity for citizens to ask questions and learn what is really going on in their community.\u201d
