The Tyrone Area School District offers a four-year-old (K4) program to children in the district.
\nFunded through Title I, the K4 classes provide youngsters with hands-on, fun and challenging activities helping them to acquire early readiness skills. Particular emphasis is placed on providing literature and language experiences crucial to later reading success. A highly-qualified paraprofessional provides teacher assistance and student support in each classroom. The preschool curriculum is based on the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards for high-quality early childhood programs.
\nIn addition to the classroom experience, the students also benefit from home visits by the K4 teacher. These visits allow the teacher to respond to each child\u2019s individual needs. The teacher and parent work in partnership to provide greater instructional consistency for the child. Communication and learning continue between the teacher and preschool families during the summer months via activity calendars that are sent to homes. The calendars reinforce skills that were learned during the school year.
\nTyrone Area School District offers morning and afternoon K4 classes, four days a week. The program is free to families who reside in the school district. Applications are accepted for children who turn four years of age by August 31. Students are selected for the program based on results of several literacy assessments.

\nThe Tyrone Area School District, Blair County Head Start and community preschools are celebrating \u201cWeek of the Young Child\u201d April 2 through April 8 to recognize the needs of young children and thank educators and others involved in building better futures for all children.
\n\u201cWeek of the Young Child\u201d is celebrated across the country by hundreds of local organizations working to improve opportunities for all young children.
\n\u201cWeek of the Young Child\u201d is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Founded in 1926, NAEYC is the largest organization of early childhood educators and others dedicated to improving the quality of early education programs for children birth through age eight. NAEYC has nearly 1,000,000 members and a national network of over 300 local, state, and regional affiliates.
\n\u201cWeek of the Young Child\u201d is an opportunity for early childhood programs across the country, including child care and Head Start programs, preschools and elementary schools, to hold activities to bring awareness to the needs of young children.
\nThe Tyrone Area School District, Blair County (Head Start) and community preschools are sponsoring programs and activities to celebrate and recognize young children and their families.
\nAlso, preschoolers\u2019 artwork is currently being showcased in windows of Tyrone businesses during \u201cWeek of the Young Child\u201d.
\nThis \u201cWeek of the Young Child\u201d celebration is the first of many community projects planned through the collaborative efforts of the Tyrone Partnership for Quality Pre-Kindergarten Programs Committee.
