Each March, the American Cancer Society, launches the nationwide Daffodil Days program, which provides a chance for individuals and community groups to contribute to the Society\\’s mission of providing education and support for those who have been affected by cancer.
\nIt also helps raise funds for continuing research in finding a cancer cure.
\nArea schools help in this campaign each year by selling daffodils.
\nA recent press release stated the 33 participating schools in Blair County raised more than $97,000 for the Blair unit of the American Cancer Society.
\nThe students collectively sold 124,319 flowers and 425 \u201cbears and bunches\u201d to raise money that will be used for patient services, education programs and cancer research.
\nTom Bradley of the Altoona Area School District has been organizing the school sales since 1988.
\nHe said, \u201cMore daffodils are sold annually in Blair County schools than in any other Pennsylvania county.\u201d
\nBoth Bellwood-Antis High School and Tyrone Junior\/Senior High School sold daffodils this year and were among 16 area schools to receive plaques for selling at least 1,000 flowers.
\nThe daffodils were pre-sold and are set to be distributed tomorrow and Friday.
\nAccording to the American Cancer Society, the daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring and is a symbol of hope for a world free of cancer.
\nIndividuals who were not able to purchase a daffodil this year are invited to sign on to the ACS website where they can send Daffodil Days e-Cards to loved ones. Also by visiting the website, individuals can make a contribution in honor of a loved one and a local Society volunteer will deliver a bouquet of daffodils anonymously to a cancer patient at a medical center in the community.
