The Borough of Tyrone is seeking volunteers and sponsors for a community cleanup day that has been scheduled for Saturday, April 22.
\nAccording to a press release from the borough, the community cleanup is part of the 2006 Great PA Cleanup, which is a statewide campaign involving local and state government, businesses, waste haulers, environmental and civic groups.
\nThe release noted the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation in cooperation with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Inc. are sponsoring the statewide event.
\nThe press release said individuals, boy scouts, girl scouts, local civic groups, service clubs, church groups and environmental clubs are invited to be part of the effort. The borough said gloves, trash bags and safety equipment would be provided. The borough also is looking to local businesses to help sponsor the event by providing refreshments and other supplies.
\nTyrone\u2019s efforts are part of a statewide campaign to remove litter and trash from the state\u2019s roadways, parks, riverbanks and open spaces.
\nAccording to a press release from Governor Ed Rendell\u2019s office, the featured event on April 22 is held in conjunction with Earth Day. However, the entire cleanup runs until the end of May. This year\u2019s effort started on March 1.
\nRendell said, \u201cEach year, tens-of-thousands of Pennsylvanians join together to help cleanup our environment and beautify our state. It is an outstanding statewide volunteer effort that produces positive results, helping us to protect the majesty of Penn\u2019s Woods.\u201d
\nThe press release noted that last year, 140,000 volunteers cleaned up more than 11,000 miles of roadways, 12,000 acres of parkland and 3,500 miles of streams.
\nThis year\u2019s Cleanup program also features incentives.

The site contains safety information, links to other cleanup organizations, a logo that can be downloaded, T-shirt iron-on transfers, posters, lesson plans for teachers and details on this year\u2019s incentives.
