Tri-County Bees from upstate New York started out Friday morning with their hitting shoes on. Turning on a offense that scored practically at will, the Bees drove the ball over the heads of the Martin Oil outfielders and dropped in all the dunkers and quails as well to pound Martin Oil into submission 18-4, in a 10 a.m. game at Vets Field.
\nDisplaying a sure finesse with their wooden bats, the Tri-County Bees opened the game with five runs in the top of the first inning, and after Martin Oil used the wildness of Bees starter Chris Farnan to come right back with three tallies of their own, kept on the offensive pressure with five more in the second and then added six runs in the third.
\n\u201cThis is by far the best team I have seen in this tournament, hitting wise,\u201d said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. \u201cThere is no question about that. They are definitely familiar with the (wood) bat.\u201d
\nSlicing the lead to two after getting shell-shocked in the first at-bat by their opponents, Martin Oil parleys an error on a grounder by leadoff hitter Jake Manning, that would be Tri-County\u2019s only miscue, Brian Hostler, Nate Gray and Earnie Kelley all drew walks from Farnan to force in Manning with the first run. Hostler scored when Trey Mock hit a shot that Bees shortstop Ron Patterson turned into a short unassisted to first base double play. Gray came home on an infield hit by Justin Miller.
\n\u201cWe scored all of our three runs in the first with only one hit,\u201d said Davis. \u201cIt was a chance to get back into the game, but didn\u2019t last long. It was obvious, they were on their \u2018A\u2019 game today with the bats. After we made it close, they went out and pinged the ball all over the place. Even without the errors we made today, it wouldn\u2019t have mattered. This was just a good-hitting ball club these guys have.\u201d
\nUnfortunately, that was all Martin Oil would score until the fifth inning, and Tri-County poured runs across the plate, combining their own solid hits with Martin Oil walks and errors.
\nIn the bottom of the fifth, needing at least four runs to avoid getting beaten by the Mercy Rule, Martin Oil could counter only with one tally.
\nWith one down, pinch hitter Matt Hinton singled to left, advanced to third on a walk to Jared Coho and a fielder\u2019s choice by Kelley, to score on a wild pitch.
\nMartin Oil was able to mount just a total of 12 hits in the three games. The top four in the Martin Oil batting order went a combined 2-for-25 in the NABF Tournament, with Kelley coming up with both hits.
\nJustin Miller singled in a run with an infield base hit, his fourth hit of the three-game round robin for Martin Oil, including a double and two RBI.
\nEarnie Kelley was on base five times, on two singles and three walks, and Matt Hinton was a perfect two-for-two with two runs scored for the George B. Kelley Federation champion Martin Oil club.
