Kopp Drug continues to move forward with their plans for a new and larger store on Logan Avenue in Tyrone.
\nRecently, Kopp Drug opened a temporary location at 1021 Pennsylvania Avenue (the old Connie\u2019s Variety location) to get ready for the eventual closing of the current Logan Avenue location in March of next year.
\nKopp Drug president Morley Cohn explained at that point in time, the plan is for work on the new building to get under way. The pharmacy will continue to operate on Logan Avenue until March. It will then move to the Pennsylvania Avenue location. The \u201cclose-out\u201d store is already open ahead of the expansion work.
\nThe current building would eventually by demolished to make way for a parking area once the new store is ready.
\nIn January of this year, demolition work on the old Sheetz Store in Tyrone was done as part of the effort to move forward with the expansion. Kopp Drug purchased the old Sheetz store after that business moved to a new location on Logan Avenue.
\nIn a previous Daily Herald article, Kopp Drug\u2019s Peter Kreckel noted plans for the new Kopp Drug building have been in the works for several years after Sheetz moved to the new location. Kopp Drug was able to negotiate the purchase of that property. Then earlier this year, company officials also purchased lots adjacent to the property they already owned.
\nCohn said, \u201cWe had a meeting with the borough planning commission and they approved our setbacks and what we need to do to build the store. It will be a free standing 10,000-square-foot store with a drive-in. It will be very similar to a store we built in Altoona on Valley View Boulevard and 7th Street.
\n\u201cSometime at the end of the summer, we hope to be in the new location and the location we\u2019re in temporarily will have another six months on the lease. So, we\u2019ll at least be there through Christmas (2006). If it works out, we can always renew the lease, if not, we can worry about that when the time comes.
\n\u201cAt the new store, we are going to feature a nice card and gift department,\u201d said Cohn.
\nHe said the store at Pleasant Valley has one-third of the floor space dedicated to cards and gifts. Plans call for a similar design at the new Tyrone location.
\nThe current 1,200-square-foot building has been in use for more than 20 years and once housed a Mister Donut shop.
\nKopp Drug currently has locations in Altoona, Bellwood, Hollidaysburg, Roaring Spring and Martinsburg.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
