This September, Joshua House opened the doors to its new building located at 123 W. 10th Street, Tyrone, the site of the former Citizens Fire Hall.
\nSince then, director of Joshua House, Jim Kilmartin, hasn\u2019t looked back. This year, he has seen growth in many of the activities and services Joshua House is able to provide for the local youth of the area.
\n\u201cWe started a basketball league that played in the Tyrone Armory every week for three months. The Tyrone Community Partnership allowed us to meet every Sunday night for youth church in the Social Center at no cost. We also opened our homes to the kids; they would come to study, hang out and watch movies,\u201d said Kilmartin in a recent newsletter, of just some of the activities held throughout 2005.
\nHe added that Joshua House took a team of 17 teens and adults to Guatemala and Belize to minister to those in need over the summer.
\nThe fifth annual Joshua House three-on-three street basketball tournament was held in June, with players coming from all over the area to play. A group of youth from Northway Christian Community in Wexford, PA helped with the tournament and block party. Next year, the tournament is scheduled to be held in July.
\nKilmartin said Joshua House was able to take 10 teens to Wildwood Crest, NJ as part of a grades incentive program for kids achieving a 3.0 GPA or raising their grades in school.
\n\u201cOur group did many other great activities throughout the year that included whitewater rafting, laser tag, Slinky Action Zone, college basketball games, and a youth conference. The Joshua House team hosted our first youth conference on Halloween weekend,\u201d Kilmartin added.
\nIn addition to Kilmartin, Nate Verilla is the assistant director at Joshua House, and Theron Glenny, Mizpah Glenny and Jessica Knowlden are preparing to help carry out the work at Joshua House in 2006.
\nKilmartin said Joshua House accepts donations and that there are several ways to help this Christmas season, including:
\n\u2022 $10\/month pledge;
\n\u2022 purchase much used items such as an: air hockey table, big screen TV, commercial-grade pool table, LCD projector, foosball table, snowblower;
\n\u2022 sponsor a child to go Christmas shopping;
\n\u2022 donate money for the third annual beach trip for good grades;
\n\u2022 pledge money for monthly expenses such as: mortgage, utilities, ministry expenses;
\n\u2022 one time monetary gift and
\n\u2022 donate money for kitchen renovations: sink, stove, cabinets and appliances.
\nThe new year will see building renovations that still need to be completed. The kitchen on the first floor will be finished as well as an office and meeting rooms on the second floor.
\nJoshua House designates 3 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday as homework time. Following that is two hours of recreation from 4 to 6 p.m., except Wednesday night which runs until 8 p.m. Friday is reserved for Joshua House basketball league games, played at the Tyrone Armory. Sunday hours are 6 to 8:30 p.m. for youth church.
