From staff reportsTyrone senior Todd Boytim and junior Francesca Lambert won first place plaques among 40 students in the Autumn Convocation of the Central Pennsylvania Speech League held on Thursday, November 17 at Williamsburg Community High School.
\nAccording to Tyrone Speech Coach Richard Merryman, Boytim had 61 out of a possible 64 points to gain first place honors overall with an oral interpretation about a dog and a drink entitled Moco and Cocoa. Lambert scored 60 out of a possible 64 in the poetry division with her oral interpretation of a poem entitled Forgetfulness, about the mind\u2019s deterioration over time.
\nCurrently, the 15 members of Tyrone\u2019s speech team will begin weekly practice for their winter competition scheduled for Thursday, February 9 at Juniata Valley High School, in nearby Alexandria.
\nMerryman expressed his appreciation to the students on the team, to their parents who chauffeured them to and from weekly rehearsals, to Tyrone teachers and administrators, and especially to Tyrone\u2019s new Athletic Director Mr. Thomas L. Coleman for his spirited encouragement.
\n\u201cWe especially appreciate the encouragement of A.D. Coleman, since we remember that 92 years ago, when Tyrone\u2019s speech team held its first interscholastic competition with nearby Huntingdon, the members of that World War I Forensics Team held debates about strengthening the Panama Canal and the American Military,\u201d said Merryman.
