The Central Pennsylvania Humane Society\u2019s annual \u201cSatan\u2019s Revenge\u201d ChiliFest is in the books for another year.
\nTyrone\u2019s Bull Pen restaurant scored big in the event held Sunday evening at Burgi\u2019s Roundhouse Bar & Grille in Logan Township. The restaurant captured second and third place finishes in the People\u2019s Choice and Best Bowl competitions respectively.
\nThis year\u2019s event featured 17 different chilis. The event featured 15 chilis in the \u201cPeople Choice\u201d and \u201cBest Bowl\u201d competitions plus a celebrity battle between WTAJ meteorologist Joe Murgo with \u201cMurgo\u2019s Meltdown\u201d and entertainer Zupe who served up \u201cShowstopper Chili.\u201d Zupe was once again the \u201cofficial\u201d entertainer at the annual event, according to CPHS head Dave Hopkins. It was close, but Murgo won by two votes.
\nThe celebrity-judging panel included some newcomers as well as some old faces. The event also included some new entries from restaurants throughout the area. Racer\u2019s from Bald Eagle participated once again in this year\u2019s event.
\nThe celebrity panel featured newcomers WTAJ-TV news anchorman John Clay, Altoona Mirror city editor Jay Young and Bruce Wissinger, Johnstown Tribune-Democrat editorial page editor. Other judges were Sam Zema (Daily Herald), Roger Corey (WALY radio), Travis Koshko (WWCP-TV), Elsie Zengel (Altoona Curve), Craig Andrews (Q-94 radio), gastroenterologist Dr. Ralph McKibbin and neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Moncman.
\nThe ChiliFest debuted new and different entries from restaurants such as Signatures (at Scotch Valley Country Club) with \u201cSignatures Back Nine\u201d chili and \u201cPar Three\u201d chili, The Heidelberg Country Club (\u201cHCC Tex\/Mex Style\u201d chili and \u201cThree Bean Chili\u201d), Fatty\u2019s Pub (Altoona) with \u201cPaint Peeling Chili\u201d and \u201cFowl Tasting Chili\u201d and the U.S. Hotel Restaurant & Tavern (Hollidaysburg) with \u201cHoly Habanero!\u201d chili.
\nReturning restaurants Uriah\u2019s Pub (winner of last year\u2019s \u201cBest Bowl\u201d with their \u201cTijuana Red\u201d chili), The Phoenix (a previous \u201cBest Bowl\u201d winner) serving up their all-new variety \u201cRed Glare\u201d chili, The Bull Pen (\u201cBull Pen Chili\u201d), Racer\u2019s Sports Bar with \u201cPit Stop\u201d chili and \u201cCheckered Flag\u201d chili and host restaurant Burgi\u2019s Roundhouse with \u201cDiesel Fuel\u201d and \u201cSteam Engine\u201d chili.
\nThe winner in this year\u2019s People Choice competition was a familiar entry for those who have attended past events. The Altoona Fire Department\u2019s \u201cFlashover\u201d chili won for the fourth year in a row. Hopkins said the department\u2019s Rick Weidlich \u201cwas coaxed out of retirement\u201d to serve up the \u201cFlashover\u201d chili once again.
\nAs mentioned, The Bull Pen finished second while Uriah\u2019s Pub\u2019s \u201cTijuana Red\u201d was third.
\nIn the \u201cBest Bowl\u201d category, newcomer Fatty\u2019s Pub scored twice with a second place finish for its \u201cPaint Peeling Chili\u201d and a first place finish for \u201cFowl Tasting Chili\u201d while the Bull Pen took third place as previously mentioned.
\nHopkins said more than 220 people attended this year\u2019s event to raise money for the Humane Society.
\n\u201cWe really thank our judging panel and especially want to thank our sponsors this year,\u201d said Hopkins.
\nHopkins said, \u201cprime sponsor\u201d City Beverage is new to the event this year.
