It\u2019s time to start planning this year\u2019s Tyrone Community Labor Day picnic, which is scheduled for Monday, September 5 at Reservoir Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
\nAccording to Executive Director of the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, Rose Black, the community picnic has been a long-time tradition in Tyrone. It was started by the Tyrone Clubman who disbanded in the early 1990s.
\nShe explained that because of the excitement and the community involvement behind it, at that time Mayor Gene Johnson saw a need to keep the tradition going and asked a group of citizens to carry on.
\nToday the group, which consists of Black, Lloyd and Bonnie Patton, Connie Geraci, Deb Garner, Christina Seiner and Amanda Golden, are busy preparing for another great year.
\nThe picnic is an opportunity for a full day to be spent close to home with family and friends.
\nNon-profit organizations are asked to participate in the day by selling food items of their choice at the park. Black explained the organizations are able to keep all the profits they may make during the day, so it turns out to be a nice fundraiser for participants.
\nSeiner, Golden and executive director of Joshua House, Jim Kilmartin, will be in charge of running the children\u2019s games this year.
\nCash donations and a 50\/50 raffle are held to award cash prizes to children who participate in the all-day organized games on land and at the community pool.
\nTo name a few participating food vendors to date, Tyrone Rotary will have chicken barbecue dinners, Tyrone Women\u2019s Club will sell rib dinners, Boy Scout Troops will have sloppy joes, hot dogs, barbecue ham, sodas and funnel cakes. Also, the Shriners will have hot sausage sandwiches, ice tea, lemonade and nachos.

\nEntertainment at the picnic will be provided by The Schoch Hollow Band, and WTRN will provide live broadcasting all day.
\nBlack said every year the busiest job for committee members is visiting the area community for donations of bingo prizes which are used for adult prize bingo. If anyone would like to donate a bingo prize or monetary donation, they may also drop them off at the Chamber office or to a committee person.
