Then effectively put the game away by plating six more times a couple innings later.
Martin Oil attempted to get back into the contest with three in the second to close to 5-4, but couldn’t get any closer.
Chad Coho led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Dustin Harris grounded a slow roller to short and Coho was caught trying to get to third base for the first out. Brian Hostler walked, and Beech ripped a triple that took a big hop past the Locker Room right fielder to score both runners. Earnie Kelley scored Beech with a grounder to first. Martin Oil then loaded the bases on walks to Zach Tomchick, Troy Brunner and Winterstein, but Locker Room starter Aaron Harris fanned Chris Alley to end the threat.
Brunner took over the pitching duties, tossing three scoreless innings to hold Locker Room, but Martin Oil was able to score only a single tally in the sixth and two more in a last-ditch effort in the seventh.
Chris McDaniel led off the fifth with a base on balls, but was forced at second by Brian Dougherty. The return throw to get Dougherty at first was wild with Dock turning and trying to get to second. A perfect relay caught Dougherty for the completion of a strange double play.
In the sixth, Kelley walked with one out and was forced out on a fielder’s choice by Tomchick. Brunner walked and Winterstein got Tomchick home with an RBI single.
With one at bat remaining, Martin Oil center fielder Dustin Harris was hit by a pitch with one down in the seventh inning. Hostler singled and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Locker Room pitcher Brett Weibley, brought in to finish out the ballgame, then fanned the next three batters. Weibley struck out Kelley on a pitch that ended up back to the screen behind home plate, allowing D. Harris to score and Hostler followed him home on another wild pitch to cap the scoring. Weibley actually struck out four Martin Oil hitters in the seventh inning, with Kelley getting to first on the wild pitch.
Martin Oil (12-6) has a rare day off today, then will host Dick’s Pharmacy at 2 p.m. at Bellwood, on Sunday afternoon.
Locker Room 11 Martin Oil 7
Martin Oil – Beech, 2b-lf, 3-2-3; Miller, cr-2b, 2-1-0; Kelley, cf-1b, 3-0-0; Tomchick, rf, 2-1-0; Brunner, 1b-p, 1-0-0; Winterstein, c, 3-0-1; Alley, ss, 2-0-0; McDaniel, cr-lf, 1-0-0; Coho, 3b, 2-0-2; Dougherty, 3b, 2-0-0; D.
