A well rested Gillmen tossed seven shutout innings and allowed only two hits Wednesday evening while scoring the only run of the ball game to help the Tyrone Legion achieve a 1-0 victory over Dick\\’s Pharmacy.
Dick\\’s Pharmacy got a great pitching performance from their starter as well. Tommy Riggleman tossed seven innings and received the hard luck loss despite only allowing one run.
The Tyrone Legion threatened in the first inning when Justin Schopp singled with two outs, and then Derrick Soellner walked. The Tyrone Legion runners pulled off a double steal, but Riggleman got Gillmen to ground out and end the inning.
Dick\\’s Pharmacy tried to manufacture a run in the bottom half of the inning when Dan DePaulis walked, went to second base on a sacrifice bunt and got to third on a wild pitch, but Gillmen struck out the next two batters to make sure he got no further.
Tyler Hoover doubled to the wall with one out in the second inning, but consecutive pop outs stranded him there.
With two outs, Dick\\’s Pharmacy loaded the bases against Gillmen in their half of the second inning, but DePaulis flied out to end the threat.
Tyler Golden and Schopp singled with one out in the third inning, but Riggleman got a double play grounder to escape the jam.
After Dick\\’s Pharmacy went quietly in their half of the third inning, the Tyrone Legion saw a scoring opportunity go up in a cloud of dust in the fourth.
Gillmen roped a line drive to left field to lead off the inning and took off for third, but the throw was a good one, and Gillmen was called out in a cloud of dust that made the play hard to see. Jesse Hertzler followed with a single but was stranded at first.
Obviously shaken by the play at third base, Gillmen hit the first batter he faced in the bottom of the fourth inning, but he recovered and induced a double play grounder and struck out Rich McCaulley to get out of the inning.
Jamie Levinson reached on a bunt single in the fifth inning, stole second base and went to third on a Golden fly out, but got no further when Riggleman retired Schopp on a pop out.
Dick\\’s Pharmacy went down in order in the bottom of the fifth, and the Tyrone Legion finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning.
With one out, Gillmen walked and stole second base. Riggleman got Hertzler on a pop out, but Hoover laced a two out single down the left field line to score Gillmen.
Dick\\’s Pharmacy got a rally of their own going in the bottom of the inning when runners reached second and third base with one out, but Gillmen fielded a grounder himself and struck out Mike Newenberg to get out of the inning.
The Tyrone Legion almost added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Donnie Conrad and Golden singled, but Schopp flew out to end the inning.
Gillmen quickly retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh inning before allowing a walk to DePaulis who then stole second, but Gillmen would not be denied of his shutout as he struck out R.C. Rudy to end the game.
“Tyler is a great pitcher when he is throwing with confidence, and that is what he did today. If you look at his season on the mound you see a great performance against ReMax Realty, a win in relief against Hoss\\’s, this game and one poor performance. When he can block out the rare slip-ups from his head, he is as good of a pitcher as anyone in this league,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said.
Hoover, who drove in the winning run, had two hits after missing Tyrone\\’s offensive explosion the day before.
“I guess everyone else was worn out from running around the bases too much yesterday, but Tyler was fresh and came up huge in a game we had to win,” Boytim said.
Legion Notes: Jared Rodgers started despite leaving the game a day earlier with an injury….Gillmen\\’s shut out was the first recorded by a Legion hurler this season….Schopp and Golden remained on fire with two hit\\’s a piece….With the victory, the Tyrone Legion finished 2-0 at Geesey Park this season.
Tyrone Legion 1 Dick\\’s Pharmacy 0
TYRONE LEGION – Levinson, ss, 4-0-1; Golden, 2b, 4-0-2; Schopp, cf, 4-0-2; Soellner, c, 2-0-0; Gillmen, p, 2-1-1; Hertzler, 3b, 3-0-1; Hoover, 1b, 3-0-2; Romano, lf, 3-0-0; Rodgers, rf, 1-0-0; Conrad, rf, 2-0-1.
