The Tyrone Legion finally got an explosion of offense that manager Mike Boytim has been looking for all season as the Legion rolled over Sheetz 16-2 Friday night.
\n\u201cBaseball has valleys and peaks, and offensively we had been in quite a valley for most of the season, so I had hoped we could break through like we did against Sheetz,\u201d Boytim said.
\nThings didn\\’t start off well offensively for either team as Tyrone Legion starter Tyler Golden sat Sheetz down in order, and Sheetz starter Aaron Schmidt did the same to the Legion.
\nSheetz struck first in the top of the second inning when Justin Adams doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Golden escaped further damage by striking out the side.
\nJustin Schopp had the first of 13 Tyrone Legion hits in the bottom of the second inning when he doubled. Schopp scored when Tyler Hoover drilled a double off the wall, and Hoover came home on a Ben Lynn single to give the Tyrone Legion a 2-1 lead.
\nGolden allowed only one man to reach in the Sheetz half of the third inning, but the Tyrone Legion would send 18 batters to the plate in a third inning that saw 13 runs come home and 10 Legion hits.
\nMatt Morrissey led off with the first of his three walks on the day, went to second on an error and scored on a Jamie Levinson single. Golden walked, and a balk moved Levinson and Golden up a base before Tyler Gillmen drove them both home with a single. Derrick Soellner followed with a double to score Gillmen, and Hoover drove home Soellner with a single.
\nJesse Hertzler and Morrissey walked to load the bases, and Levinson cleared them with a three-run double. Golden knocked in Levinson with a base hit followed Gillmen, Soellner and Schopp singles that brought in three more runs. Hertzler brought home the final run of the inning with a single to make the score 15-1 after three innings.
\nSheetz added a run in the top of the fourth off reliever Derrick Soellner, but the Legion got the run right back with the help of three walks in the bottom of the inning.
\nSoellner worked a scoreless fifth to give the Tyrone Legion a 16-2 mercy rule victory.
\n\u201cI was really pleased with the way our hitters took care of business tonight. Sheetz didn\\’t throw any quality pitchers, and we were able to take advantage of it,\u201d Boytim said.
\nSunday afternoon, the Tyrone Legion were on the other side of a rout.
\nPlaying with only nine players, the Legion could do nothing but watch Barkman Oil\/Altoona First pile on run after run in a 16-1 loss.
\nStarting pitcher Tyler Golden was unable to continue pitching due to an arm injury in the first inning, and with Tyler Gillmen unable to pitch, no one with any pitching experience was available.
\nJustin Schopp, Jesse Hertzler and Matt Morrissey struggled to just throw strikes as Barkman Oil\/Altoona First rounded the bases.
\nThe lone bright spot for the Tyrone Legion was Hertzler\\’s second inning home run over the left field fence.
\n\u201cOur scheduled starter couldn\\’t make it, and a bunch of the other kids had other things going on as well. Unfortunately we didn\\’t have any pitching today, and when we don\\’t get solid pitching, we are in trouble,\u201d Boytim said.
\nTyrone\\’s next game will be today when they host Martin Oil at 6 p.m.
\nLegion Notes: Todd Boytim, playing the field for the first time this season, had an outfield assist on Sunday….Morrissey has walked in five of his last six plate appearances….Hertzler\\’s home run was the second hit by the Tyrone Legion this season, the first was by Tyler Gillmen, also in a losing effort.
