Host Mount Union starter Ryan Pollicino put Bellwood-Antis down on seven pitches. Then Blue Devil starter Earnie Kelley returned the favor getting the Trojans on seven pitches.
The news however was that Pollicino took a perfect game into the fourth inning, when Andy Brisbin hit a solid single to center. Pollicino allowed just one more base hit, a double by Adam DeArmitt, while Mount Union cleanup batter Matt Hoffmaster unloaded a pair of two-run home runs in consecutive innings on the way to an 11-1 Mount Union victory in five innings.
A hit batsman and a walk contributed to a pair of Mount Union tallies in the bottom of the second. Hoffmaster was hit by a pitch and after Jordy Yocum sacrificed him up a base and Kelley struck out Pollicino, Daren Himes walked. Brandon Clemens singled in Hoffmaster and Paul Atherton singled to score Himes.
Mount Union added to their lead in the third with a two-run blast by Hoffmaster, and scored four more runs in the fourth, half of them on another dinger by Hoffmaster and two more on a double by Bubba Brown.
After the Blue Devils scored their solo tally in the top of the fifth, when Tyler McClellan walked with one out, advanced to third on DeArmitt’s two-bagger. Justin Manning was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brian Hostler scored McClellan on an RBI groundout for the only Bellwood-Antis run.
The Trojans then put three runs on the board to stop the game. Atherton walked, stole second base and scored on the only error of the game by either team. John Martinez, who reached on McClellan’s miscue and Brown, who had singled both scored on a base hit by Seth McVey to end the contest, via the 10-run mercy rule.
“Their kid (Pollicino) came out and threw a good game, a good five innings and just kept us off balance,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Steve Conlon. “We got a few good at bats and hit the ball hard at times. It just wasn’t our time today. It was his day on the mound.”
Bellwood-Antis (2-11) will complete the Everett game on Friday at 3 p.m. The game was stopped on April 22, because of rain, with B-A down 3-2, and batting in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and runners at first and third.
